Joaquin Niemann will be the third player in the final group Sunday, alone in third another shot back after a 65.

Spieth is a year younger than Muñoz at 28 but has three majors among 13 career victories after starring at the University of Texas. Muñoz, who played in college nearby at North Texas, is 2.5 years removed from his lone PGA Tour win.

Tri-State figures

The Tri-State section of the PGA of America has sought to beef up its Open championship by offering prize money commensurate with the tournament’s stature. After all, it’s the section’s second oldest tournament, dating to 1963. Finally, with the help of a fiveyear commitment from Horizon

Properties Group, it has happened. For the first time in its 59-year history, the TriState Open will offer a $10,000 prize to the winner, nearly fourtimes what the champion had previously earned. The 36-hole tournament, scheduled for June 6-7, will also have a permanent home for the next five years — Southpointe Golf Club, the Arthur Hills-designed course in Canonsburg, Washington County. The connection is natural. Horizon Properties president Rod Piatt also owns the Southpointe course.
