U.S. rallies to beat Austria in world hockey match

Luke Hughes scored with 1:57 left in overtime to complete a United States comeback from two goals down to edge Austria, 3-2, at the ice hockey world championsh­ip Sunday.

Benjamin Nissner scored in the first period and Paul Huber added another early in the second to give Austria a 2-0 lead in the Group B game in Tampere, Finland. Kieffer Bellows started the comeback later in the second before Adam Gaudette tied it with a power-play goal in the final period to force overtime.

The U.S. outshot Austria 39-16 on the way to its second win in two games.

Canada followed suit in less dramatic fashion, cruising to a 6-1 win over Italy for its second victory of the tournament.

Baseball

The New York Boulders won the rubber game of the weekend series, 5-4, at Washington Wild Things Park. Washington’s shortstop Nick Ward continued to swing a hot bat to start the season in his first at-bat Sunday by hitting a home run making the score 2-1. Ward scored again in the third inning on a base hit by right fielder Wagner LaGrange to tie the score, 33. The Wild Things will hit the road tomorrow to head to the Sussex County Miners for a three-game series in Augusta, N.J.

Tennis

That loss to Carlos Alcaraz seems to have motivated Novak Djokovic to step up his game. Djokovic raised his first trophy of the year at the Italian Open and showed that he’s back in top form exactly a week before the French Open starts. Having missed a large portion of the season because he wasn’t vaccinated against the coronaviru­s, the top-ranked Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas, 6-0, 7-6 (5), for his sixth Rome title.

• Iga Swiatek is going into the French Open on quite a run. The top-ranked Swiatek overwhelme­d Ons Jabeur, 6-2, 6-2, to defend her Italian Open title and extend her winning streak to 28 matches.

• Watching the recent news from Ukraine is “very upsetting,” No. 2- ranked tennis player Daniil Medvedev said of the war that led Wimbledon organizers to ban him and other Russians from their tournament. The U.S. Open champion spoke at the Geneva Open where he returns to action after a five-week absence from the ATP Tour for surgery on a hernia injury.

Soccer

Cristian Roldan’s goal proved to be pivotal as the Seattle Sounders picked up a 3-1 win against visiting Minnesota United (4-5-2) in MLS play. Roldan’s goal put the Sounders (3-5-1), who snapped a three-game losing streak, up for good at 2-1 in the 74th minute. Raul Ruidiaz got an assist on the goal.

• Luiz Araujo scored the equalizer for host Atlanta United in a 2-2 tie with the New England Revolution. Araujo’s tying goal came in the 63rd minute for United (4-4-3). Thiago Almada got an assist on the goal. Adam Buksa scored two goals for the Revolution (3-5-3).

Colleges

Pitt (27-22, 13-13) clinched a spot in the ACC baseball tournament May 24-29 for a second consecutiv­e season for the first time after defeating host No. 8 Notre Dame (31-11, 15-9), 5-2. The victory was the sixth of the season for the Panthers against a top-10 team (two each against then-No. 5 Virginia and then-No. 5 Louisville and one at No. 4 Miami).

• The RMU rowing team concluded its 2021-22 season by finishing eighth at the 2022 Metro Atlantic Athletic

Conference (MAAC) Championsh­ips in Pennsauken Township, N.J. Jacksonvil­le compiled a perfect total of 54 points, capturing grand final first-place.

• Saint Francis softball was selected to travel to No. 3 Virginia Tech in the NCAA tournament regional. The two other teams selected for the Blacksburg regional were Kentucky and Miami (Ohio).
