Griffins advance with win against Adelphi
The Seton Hill Griffins (42-11) advanced with a 8-1 win against the No. 1-seeded Adelphi Panthers in the losers’ bracket of the Division II tournament in Denver.
Jenna Osikowicz doubled to center field driving in Nichole McClendon and Nina Grandey to put Seton Hill up, 2-0.
Osikowicz advanced to third on the throw to home.
Morgan Ryan than doubled to left-center field to make the score 3-0.
The Griffins added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to stretch their lead to 6-1, using several singles and a double steal to keep the line moving for Seton Hill.
Seton Hill put the game away with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, sparked by stolen bases and another Panthers error.
Ryan also pitched a strong game against Adelphi, going the complete seven innings, giving up just eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Adelphi head coach Carla Campagna and assistant coach Lou Vanacore led Adelphi to a program-best 47 wins this season.

No. 11 seed Pitt baseball faces No. 10 NC State at 5 p.m. Saturday in the ACC tournament semifinals in at Truist Field Charlotte, N.C. Reaching the semifinals in 2018, the Panthers look to make their first ACC final appearance. The semifinals (1 and 5 p.m.) will be broadcasted Saturday on the ACC Network with the championship at noon Sunday on ESPN2.
• Duquesne University junior Collin Ebling rallied on the final turn to place third in his heat of the 800-meter run at the NCAA East Preliminary Championship at Indiana University to automatically qualify for the 2022 NCAA Division I Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships next month in Oregon. Ebling was near the rear of the pack entering the final turn, before pulling past all but two of the competitors in the first of three heats of the quarterfinals of the 800 meters. He crossed the final line at one minute, 48.41 seconds to post the sixth-fastest time out of the 25 runners who reached the quarterfinal round.

NCAA All-American status in Geneva, Ohio, finishing in the top 8 in the high jump at the NCAA Championships. Smith became an All-American for the third time in his career, placing sixth out of 19. Smith finished with a mark of 2.05m with three points Friday. Hetrick earned his first national accolade, finishing eighth at 2.05m and one point.
• Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado became the first VCU women’s tennis student-athlete to reach the NCAA semifinals as she defeated No. 36 Michaela Bayerlova of Washington State in the NCAA quarterfinals.
Baseball
Washington (8-5) ran out to 11-0 lead before the visiting New Jersey Jackles (5-7) rallied for seven runs to make it close in a 13-7 Wild Things win in the Frontier League. Shortstop Nick Ward had a big game, going 3 for 5 with three RBIs and four runs scored for the Wild Things. Second baseman Scotty Dubrule went 1 for 3 with three walks and two RBIs in the win.
Soccer
Manchester City’s Zack Steffen will miss the United States’ four World Cup prep matches next month for what the team said was family reasons, and he was replaced on the roster by D.C.’s Sean Johnson. The 27-yearold Steffen was considered the top American goalkeeper going into qualifying in September 2021.
• Liverpool’s injury concerns have eased ahead of the final against Real Madrid in Paris, with midfielders Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara back in full training. Thiago was the biggest worry for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after the Spain international came off with an Achilles tendon injury in the first half of the team’s 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Sunday in the final round of the English Premier League.
Tennis
Women’s professional tennis will return to Washington as part of a combined ATP-WTA event at the Citi Open this year. The hardcourt tournament will be played from July 30 to Aug. 7 at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center. The WTA 250 event will have a 32-player singles field and 16 doubles teams.
