Wild Things’ Roa sets home run mark in loss

The Washington Wild Things lost, 10-4, to the New Jersey Jackals in the second of a three-game series and a high-scoring affair that saw five home runs hit.

Hector Roa hit a three-run homer and catcher Alex Alvarez also went long in the second inning for Washington, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the New Jersey Jackals (6-7) beat the Wild Things (8-6).

Roa’s home run gave him the franchise record for most home runs in a Wild Things career with 58, surpassing the previous record holder Jacob Dempsey.

Soccer

Real Madrid became European champion for a record-extending 14th time after beating Liverpool, 1-0, in a Champions League final that started 37 minutes late because of disturbing crowd issues outside the Stade de France in Paris. Brazil winger Vinícius Júnior applied a close-range finish in the 59th minutel, securing a win that gave Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti a record fourth European Cup title.

• Erik Hurtado scored the deciding goal in a 2-1 win for the visiting Columbus Crew (4-5-4) against Atlanta United (4-5-4). Hurtado scored in the 45th minute, assisted by Derrick Etienne, to put the Crew up 2-0.

• Alejandro Pozuelo scored in the 71st and 78th minutes to give host Toronto FC (4-7-3) a 3-2 victory against the Chicago Fire (2-75). Pozuelo returned after

missing three games because of a lower-body injury.

• Brian Rodriguez scored the deciding goal in a 3-2 win for visiting Los Angeles FC over the San Jose Earthquake­s (3-6-5). Rodriguez’s game-winner came in the 47th minute for LAFC (9-3-2) and was the only goal scored in the second half.

Hockey

Defenseman Miro Heiskanen had a goal and two assists and Finland beat the United States, 4-3, in Tampere, Finland, to set up its third consecutiv­e world championsh­ip final against Canada. Dylan Cozens scored twice in Canada’s 6-1 victory over the Czech Republic in the other semifinal. Nate Schmidt, Sean Farrell and Adam Gaudette scored for the Americans. Jeremy Swayman stopped 22 shots.

College

Michael Seegers went 4 for 6, Kyle Huckstorf was 2 for 3 with a walk and three runs scored and No. 3 seed Iowa beat Penn State, 11-3, in Omaha, Neb., to eliminate the Nittany Lions from the Big Ten tournament. ... Freshman Josh Pyne had a two-out, two-run single in the top of the 11th inning to spark No. 8 seed Indiana to a 6-4 victory against topseeded Maryland in an eliminatio­n game.

• Trey Faltine had three hits and drove in four runs to lift fifth-seeded Texas into the Big 12 tournament championsh­ip in Arlington, Texas, with a 9-2 win against fourth-seeded Oklahoma State.

• Tyler Bosma struck out 10 and allowed just one hit in six innings and No. 12 seed Kentucky rolled to a 7-2 victory against No. 4 seed LSU in the SEC tournament in Hoover, Ala. ... Wyatt

Langford hit a leadoff home runs for No. 7 seed Florida in the first and second innings in the 11-6 win against Alabama.

• Ben Shelton rallied to beat San Diego’s August Holmgren and give Florida back-to-back men’s tennis singles national championsh­ips and Peyton Stearns of Texas took the women’s title with a straight-sets win against Stanford’s Connie Ma at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Ill.

Cycling

Jai Hindley stormed into the lead of the Giro d’Italia on the fearsome Marmolada in Italy with a day left. A mighty mountainou­s stage was won by Alessandro Covi for his first grand tour victory following a long solo attack.
