Cavaliers hire Walton to staff
Former Lakers’ coach an assistant
The Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday hired former Los Angeles Lakers coach Luke Walton as an assistant under J.B. Bickerstaff.
Walton, 42, finished his 11year NBA playing career with the Cavaliers in 2012 before getting into coaching.
He spent nine years playing for the Lakers, winning NBA titles in 2009 and 2010.
Walton coached the Lakers from 2017-19 before going to Sacramento. He also served as an assistant with Golden State, winning a title in 2015.

Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid had surgeries for a sprained right thumb and an injury to his left index finger. Neither procedure s expected to impact Embiid’s availability for training camp.
• Tim Connelly officially joined the Timberwolves as president of basketball operations.
Colleges
Pitt lacrosse ended its inaugural season on a positive note, receiving votes in the final IL Women/IWLCA Division I poll. The last poll of the 2022 season was the fourth time during the Panthers’ first year that they received votes in the top women’s lacrosse poll.
• Clemson fired baseball coach Monte Lee after his team missed its second consecutive NCAA tournament. Lee had spent seven seasons with the Tigers. He made the NCAA tournament in each of his first four seasons to extend the program’s run of 32 consecutive postseason appearances before missing the past two.
Soccer
John Wroblewski was named the head coach of the U.S. national women’s hockey team after recent success guiding the men’s development program. Wroblewski’s hiring is currently limited for now to coaching the American women at the world championships in Denmark in August.
• Ukraine is two games from qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar, starting with a match against Scotland in Glasgow on Wednesday — which was postponed in March following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The winner at Hampden Park will play against Wales on Sunday in the decisive playoff for qualifying for a trip to Qatar.
Golf
European Ryder Cup captain Henrik Stenson named Italian Edoardo Molinari as a vice captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone outside of Rome.
Tennis
Women’s professional tennis will return to the San Diego area this fall for the first time in seven years. The $823,000 San Diego Open will be played Oct. 8-16 at Barnes Tennis Center.
