Well-traveled G commits to Pitt

Fifth offseason transfer to Panthers

Pitt picked up another commitment late Friday. Cashius McNeilly, a 6-foot-4 guard from Northern Oklahoma College at the junior collegelev­el, committed via socialmedi­a. McNeilly will bethe seventh newcomer for the Panthers in the 2022-23 seasonand the fifth transfer, joining Colgate’s Nelly Cummings, Iowa State’s Blake Hinson, Marquette’s Greg Elliott and former Northern Oklahoma teammate Fede Federiko.It’s unclear how many years of eligibilit­y McNeilly will have available after taking a circuitous route to Pitt.

The Canadian was a fourstar prospect in the 2019 recruiting cycle and started his collegiate career at Texas A&M, where he took a medical red shirt as a freshman. McNeilly transferre­d to TCU, butnever played for Jamie Dixon’s Horned Frogs. He ended up at Northern Oklahoma, averaging 10 points lastseason. McNeilly was previously committed to Maryland this year but opened up his recruitmen­t after coach Mark Turgeon stepped down.

Thatwould be it for the Slammers.Dan Kubiuk, Kenny Pierson, Bryan Quillens and Christian James went the final six innings without allowing a hit.

Offensivel­y, Hector Roa doubledin two runs in the thirdinnin­g to give the Wild Things a 4-0 lead. Nick Ward singledin two runs an inning later.

Runningbac­k D’Ernest Johnson agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns worth up to$2.43 million, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said.

Johnson, who did a nice job filling in last season when Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt were out injured, will get$900,000 guaranteed.

France and Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has dropped his appeal against a conviction for complicity in blackmail in a sex-tape case that rocked French soccer, his lawyer said. The Versailles court gave Benzema a one year suspended jail sentence anda fine of $80,000 in last year’s trial, convicting him of involvemen­t in an attempt to blackmail France teammate Mathieu Valbuena in 2015.

Horse racing

The5-2 favorite Desert Crown strolled to victory in the Epsom Derby and gave owner Michael Stoute his sixth win in the British Classic in Epsom, England. Jockey Richard Kingscote rode the horse to 2½-length win over 150-1outsider Hoo Ya Mal.
