Williams sisters absent from Wimbledon entry list

Serena and Venus Williams did not appear on the women’s singles entry list released by Wimbledon on Friday. It is possible that either player could request a wild card invitation to the Grand Slam tournament, which begins on June 27.

Serena Williams has won seven of her Open era record 23 major singles championsh­ip sat the All England Club, most recently in 2016. The 40year-old American was the runner-up there in 2018 and 2019and has not competed any where since injuring her right leg and needing to stop playing in her first-round match a year ago.

Venus Williams is a five time singles champion at Wimble don and has seven major singles trophies in all. Her most recent match on tour came at Chicago last August.She turns 42 in two weeks.

Also missing from the entry list is Leylah Fernandez, the2021 U.S. Open runner-up who injured her right foot duringa loss at the French Open this week.

Pro baseball

The Washington Wild Things scored two runs in the second inning off Logan Schmitt, who was making his profession­al debut for host Joliet, and three pitchers made it holdup in a 2-1 win.

Schmitt settled down, going 6⅓innings, but not before he allowed two-out double to Hector Roa. A single by Ian Walters brought Roa home as Walters advanced to second onthe throw home. A single by LG Castillo made the score 2-0.

Rob Whalen allowed a homerun to Brylie Ware in the fourth inning, his first of theseason, for the Slammers’ only run of the game. Whalen wents even innings for his fourth win of the season, and Lukas Young got his fourth save. Jake Pilarski worked a scoreless eighth.

The Big 12 Conference will distribute a record $426 million of revenue to its 10 schools forthe 2021-22 school year, a nearly25% increase over last yearand 10% higher than its peakb efore the pandemic. “We find ourselves in a very strong position today,” Texas Techpresid­ent Lawrence Sch ova nec, chairman of the Big12 board, said Friday at theend of the spring meetings. •Arizona basketball coach Tommy Lloyd will get a $1 million raise next season in a proposed five-year contract extension through 2027 following a successful first season in the desert. The extension must still be approved by the Arizona Board of Regents.

Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie Mc Avoy had arthro scopic surgery on his left should erand is expected to miss the start of the regular season.The Bruins said McAvoy had a “stabilizat­ion procedure ”and is expected to need sixmonths to recover. That would bring him back in December. A 2016 first-round draft choice and the team’s No.1 defenseman, McAvoy had10 goals and 46 assists last season.

NBA Commission­er Adam Silver said he expects the oftmaligne­d “transition take foul” to come with stiffer penalties next season. Silver expects the rules regarding the play— where a defender intentiona­lly commits a foul to halt a transition opportunit­y forthe opposition — are going tochange this summer. It’s been something the NBA and its competitio­n committee havebeen studying for several seasons. Momentum has been building for several months toward a change, one that now seems likely to come at league meetings in July.

Former Brazil defender Alex said he underwent heart by pass surgery earlier this week.The 39-year-old retired fromthe sport in 2016 after a longand successful career playingfor Chelsea, PSV Eindhoven, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan.
