1864 Allegheny City’s Sanitary Fair closed after raising $363,570 in 16 days for the benefit of Union soldiers and their dependents. (At the end of the war, $200,000 unused funds were given to West Penn Hospital as a nucleus for an endowment.)

1903 Ford Motor Co. was incorporated.

1933 The National Industrial Recovery Act became law with President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s signature. (The Act was later struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.)

1975 DeLeuw, Cather & Co. was to study the Skybus concept. The firm of engineers chosen by Transit Task Force was to receive $446,745 for the study.

1994 The U.S. Open Golf Championship began at Oakmont Country Club. (Ernie Els of South Africa won after a 20-hole sudden death playoff on June 21.)

2020 Federal authorities announced murder and attempted murder charges against an Air Force sergeant, Steven Carrillo, in the fatal shooting of a federal security officer outside a U.S. courthouse in Oakland, Calif. (Carrillo, who had ties to the far-right, anti-government “boogaloo” movement, pleaded guilty to a federal murder charge after prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty.)
