Suspect arrested in garage vandalism

- By Jesse Bunch

A nearly 15- minute spree of vandalism in a Downtown parking garage this month resulted in one arrest on Wednesday — and over $16,000 in damages, authorities say.

Dallas Bobnes, 28, of Pittsburgh, was charged with 13 counts of criminal mischief, one of them a felony.

Police were working to confirm the identity of a person caught on security cameras riding a dirt bike into the Oliver Parking Garage in the early morning on June 1.

Once the rider made it to the garage’s sixth floor, his spree began.

Footage shows the man kicking the side mirrors off several vehicles as he worked his way down to the third floor.

The damages began to rack up when he reached the third floor, when he ripped a fire extinguisher off the wall and smashed the windshields and rear windows of a handful of cars.

In just 13 minutes, the spree was over, and the man fled the scene on the green and white dirt bike, wearing a mask covering his head and neck.

Motorists, whose vehicles ranged from Toyotas and Hyundais to a Porsche and a Tesla, reported between $500 and $6,000 in damages to police.

After police released still shots from the security footage, multiple tips led them to Bobnes. Police were then able to link the man’s tattoos captured in the footage to images of Bobnes on Facebook.

According to police, Bobnes was on probation and house arrest during the Downtown incident. He was employed at a restaurant as a dishwasher.

A spokesperson for Pittsburgh police said it’s unknown what Bobnes’ motive for allegedly vandalizing the vehicles was.

Bobnes is in the Allegheny County Jail, where he was unable to post bail.

A preliminary hearing is set for June 28.
