Romanchuk competes for country

Elite swimmer Mykhailo Romanchuk doesn’t know if his father was able to see him winning a medal for Ukraine at the swimming world championsh­ips in Budapest, Hungary.

Romanchuk’s father is fighting in the east of Ukraine, where pockets of resistance are still denying Russia full military control of the region almost four months after it unleashed its invasion.

“He’s in a hot spot and it’s a hard time,” Romanchuk, 25, said after taking bronze in the men’s 800-meter freestyle race on Tuesday.

Romanchuk — who still intends to race the men’s 1,500, then the 10K and 5K races in open water at the worlds — said he was both “proud and disappoint­ed” of his third place.

He said his medal proves “that Ukrainians will fight to the end.”

The Washington Wild Things (22-12) returned home to face off against the Lake Erie Crushers (14-12) n their first meeting of the regular season. Washington beat the Crushers, 5-4, when. second baseman Scotty Dubrule (3 for 5) lined a single into leftcenter, bringing in the tying and winning runs and securing the walk-off win for Washington.

Tennis

Serena Williams strode onto center court at Devonshire Park in Eastbourne, England, to a standing ovation for her first competitiv­e tennis match in nearly a year. Williams partnered Ons Jabeur to victory against Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marie Bouzkova in the first round of the women’s doubles. Williams and Jabeur recovered from losing the first set 6-2 to win the second 6-3 and then the match tiebreaker 13-11 on their third match point.

Football

Four-time All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement again, meaning he will not join Tom Brady for a third season in Tampa Bay.

Colleges

Defensive end prospect Tomarrion Parker from Alabama, announced his commitment to Penn State. And the list of schools he chose Penn State over is impressive. SEC powers Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Texas A&M as well as Big Ten rivals Michigan and Michigan State had all presented scholarshi­p offers to him.

Soccer

The United States will play Japan and Saudia Arabia in its final two World Cup warmups. The 15thranked Americans will play No. 23 Japan in an exhibition on Sept. 23 at a European site to be announced. Four days later, the U.S. will face No. 49 Saudi Arabia in a friendly four days later in Murcia, Spain.

Maya Caldwell scored 18 points and Rhyne Howard added 16 points as Atlanta (88) beat visiting Dallas (8-9), 80-75, to snap a four-game WNBA losing streak.

Olympics

The price tag for last year’s COVID-delayed Tokyo Olympics was $13 billion, the organizing committee said in its final act before it is dissolved at the end of the month. The cost was twice what was forecast in 2013.
