Duquesne beats buzzer, Ball State

Clark’s 3-pointer at the finish lifts Dukes to 7-1 on the season

Jimmy Clark III sank a back-up 3-pointer from the left wing at the buzzer to lift the Duquesne men’s team to a 78-77 victory against Ball State at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

Clark, a junior guard, finished the game with 16 points to lead Duquesne (7-1). He also had 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Tevin Brewer added 14 points and Dae Dae Grant, who was strapped with foul trouble, chipped in with 11.

Jayline Sellers had given the Cardinals a 77-75 lead with a made jumper and a free throw with 12 seconds to play. Ball State fell to 4-4 with the loss.

Duquesne is 6-0 at home this season and will continue its homestand Thursday against Marshall.

District men

Northern Kentucky 60, Robert Morris 56: Trailing by two with 13 seconds to play, the Colonials lost the ball on a turnover in the lane. Northern Kentucky closed out the scoring at the free throw line. Robert Morris fell to 3-6, 1-1 in the Horizon League.

Top 25 men

Ohio State 96, Saint

Francis 59: Brice Sensabaugh led the 25th-ranked Buckeyes (6-2) with 15 points and Bruce Thornton added 13 at Columbus. Ohio State went on a 13-5 run early in the second half and at one point had stretched its lead to 39 points.

Virginia 62, Florida State 57: The third-ranked Cavaliers won their 15th consecutiv­e ACC opener behind Kihei Clark’s 18 points. The Seminoles (1-9, 0-1) led 22-21 at the half as both teams combined to shoot just 30%.

Arkansas 99, San Jose State 58: Sophomore forward Trevon Brazile scored 23 points for the Razorbacks (6-1), who blew open a close game by outscoring the Spartans (6-2) 5923 in the second half.

Rutgers 63, Indiana 48: Freshman guard Derek Simpson scored 10 unanswered points in a game-deciding run and the 10th-ranked Scarlet Knights (6-2, 1-0) handed the 10th-ranked Hoosiers their first loss of the season. Simpson finished with 14 points and teammate Cale McConnell with 16 in the two team’s Big Ten Conference opener at Piscataway, N.J.

Duke 75, Boston College: Freshman forward Mark 59:

Mitchell totaled 15 points and freshman center Kyle Filipowski addded 13 with 10 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils (8-2, 1-0) in their ACC opener. Duke opened in control and led 35-23 at halftime and kept the Eagles (54, 0-1) at bay the best of the way.

Top 25 women

South Carolina 79, Memphis 54: Kamilla Cardosa sored 18 points and added 10 rebounds to leads undefeated South Carolina, the No. 1 women’s team, to an easy win at home against Memphis. The Gamecocks (80) took control early, outscoring the Tigers 27-14 in the first quarter.

Oregon 90, Portland 51: Freshman guard Chance Gray scored 20 points and sophomore center Phillipina Kyei hauled down 13 rebounds to go with her 12 points as the 19th-ranked Ducks (6-1) breezed to victory against Portland (5-4). Alex Fowler scored 19 to lead the Pilots.

District women

West Virginia 63, Delaware State 47: Madisen Smith’s 24 points led the Mountainee­rs (6-1) to their fifth consecutiv­e victory at home to start the season. Delaware State trailed throughout the game but did take a 33-32 lead with 3:48

left in the third quarter. West Virginia responded with a free throw by Savannah Brooks and never trailed again.

• The ACC, SEC and ESPN announced a new ACC/SEC

Challenge for men’s and women’s teams to begin in the 2023-24 season. It will feature 28 games until the 2025-26 season when Texas and Oklahoma join the Southeaste­rn Conference to expand the Challenge to 30 games.

• Longtime Villanova coach Jay Wright was courtside for the Wildcats’ 70-66 win against Oklahoma. Wright, who built a national power at Villanova, was there as a CBS broadcast analyst and watched him old team improve to 3-5.
