Cleaver leads the way in Union win

Kelly Cleaver recorded 24 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, three blocks and two assists to lead Union to a 5548 upset of Aquinas Academy in Class 1A Section 1 opener.

Aquinas (5-3, 1-0) entered the game ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL by the Post-Gazette, while Union (8-2, 0-1) is No. 3.

Also scoring in double figures for the Scotties were Zoe Lepri ( 14) and Kylie Fruehstorf­er (13). Elli Juncker led Aquinas Academy with 14 points.

Other girls games

•Bethel Park (4-6, 1-2) rallied from a five-point deficit to outscore Chartiers Valley (53, 1-1), 21-15, in the fourth quarter and pull out a 46-45 win against the host Colts in Class 6A Section 2. Chartiers Valley’s Ella Cupka led all scorers with 19 points.

• Alayna Rocco connected on five of six 3-point attempts and finished with 17 points as Class 4A No. 2 North Catholic (7-3, 3-0) remained unbeaten in Section 1 with a 61-27 win against visiting Derry (8-5, 1-2).

• Shenango (7-3, 2-1) held off a second- half rally to record a narrow 46-43 win against visiting Aliquippa (3-4, 1-1) in Class 2A Section 2. The No. 2 ranked Wildcats (73, 2-1) were led by Kylee Rubin (20 points) and Janie Natale (11).

•Hope Hawkins tallied 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Carmen Vasquez had 12 points and 11 rebounds as Woodland Hills (3-6, 1-1) posted a 62-47 upset of host Plum (7-4, 2-1) in Class 5A Section 1. Megan Marson led the Mustangs with 21 points.

• Regan Atkins recorded 22 points and five steals and Johnna Hill added 18 points and six assists to lead 3A No. 3 Laurel (8-1, 1-0) to a 58-45 win against host Mohawk (6-4, 0-1) in a Section 1 opener. Erynne Capalbo had 13 points for Mohawk.

Stars of the night

• Tiffany Zelmore netted 41 points to lead Mount Pleasant (9-2, 1-0) to a 59-44 win against Burrell (5-6, 0-1) in a Class 3A Section 3 girls opener. Riley Gesinski added 12 points for the Vikings. Casey Brancato led Burrell with 12.

• Shea Champine poured in 35 points as Class 2A No. 2 Bishop Canevin (8-0, 1-0) remained unbeaten with a 7158 win at Nazareth Prep in a Section 2 boys opener. Michael Vaughn added 12 for the Crusaders. Nazareth Prep was led by Will Evans (19).
