Green III drops in 24 as Robert Morris men’s basketball wins

Michael Green III scored a season-high 24 points as Robert Morris men’s basketball defeated host Purdue Fort Wayne, 71-64, on Sunday.

Green also contribute­d five assists for the Colonials (12-15, 7-9 Horizon League). Kahliel Spear added 12 points and seven rebounds. Green’s 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:17 remaining snapped a 64-all tie and was part of a 16-2 run for Robert Morris. Jarred Godfrey led the Mastodons (1512, 7-9) with 23 points.

Other college hoops

The Pitt women’s basketball team (9-16, 2-12 ACC) earns a double overtime road win against Georgia Tech (12-13, 3-11 ACC) as they downed the Yellow Jackets, 85-79. Pitt had five players score in double figures in the win. Liatu King had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Panthers. Avery Strickland tied a career-high with 17 points. Maliyah Johnson finished with 16 points, while Dayshanett­e Harris netted 15 and Channise Lewis finished with 11. Trailing by three, 71-68, with 2.5 seconds to play, Lewis took the inbound pass and buried a contested 3-pointer to send the game to overtime with a buzzer-beating triple.

• The Duquesne women’s team (15-10, 5-7 Atlantic 10) fell on the road to La Salle (15-11, 6-5), 72-56. Junior center Precious Johnson led Duquesne with 15 points.

• The Penn State women’s team (13-12, 4-10 Big Ten) fell, 81-75, in overtime to host Michigan State (13-12, 5-9). Penn State held the lead twice in the overtime period off a 3-pointer and jumper from Shay Ciezki, but the Spartans ended the game on a 10-3 run. Makenna Marisa had 22 points for Penn State.

• Kamilla Cardoso had 18 points and 13 rebounds, and host No. 1 South Carolina women beat third-ranked LSU, 88-64, in a showdown of the last two unbeaten teams. Aliyah Boston finished with 14 points and nine boards for the Gamecocks (25, 12-0 SEC). Angel Reese couldn’t get going, going 5-of-15 shooting for 16 points and four rebounds for her first game this season without double figure boards for LSU (23-1, 11-1).

Golf

South Africa’s Ockie Strydom shot a 9-under 63 to power up the leaderboar­d and clinch the Singapore Classic in Singapore by one stroke from Finland’s Sami Valimaki. Strydom carded a final round of 63 — the best score of the final day at Laguna National Golf Resort Club — to finish at 19-under 269 overall.

Olympics

Insisting sports had to respect the human rights of all athletes, Internatio­nal Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach denied that the organizati­on was on the wrong side of history by helping Russians and Belarusian­s qualify for the 2024 Paris Summer Games. Bach and the IOC have faced a widespread backlash from Ukraine and its allies, including comments directed at him by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, since setting out a path last month for some athletes from Russia and Belarus to return to internatio­nal competitio­n despite the war waged by their countries.

Winter sports

USA Luge’s Emily Sweeney picked up her team-best fifth medal of the World Cup season, a bronze in a women’s singles race in Germany. Sweeney was third in 1:52.038.

• Swiss skier Marco Odermatt ended his four-year wait for a world championsh­ip medal in impressive style, dominating the men’s downhill with a gutsy run on the demanding L’Eclipse course to win gold in France.

Soccer

Brentford striker Ivan Toney was the victim of racist abuse after a 1-1 draw at Arsenal, his club said.

Toney, who is Black, was targeted on social media after his goal in the Premier League game at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

“Immediatel­y after Brentford’s game against Arsenal, Ivan Toney received a barrage of abusive, racist direct messages via his Instagram account,” Brentford said. “We are disgusted and saddened that Ivan has had to deal with this yet again.”
