Hurricanes top Blues to run streak to four

Andrei Svechnikov scored twice in the first eight minutes to break a 19-game goal drought and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the St. Louis Blues, 4-1, Tuesday night in Raleigh, N.C.

Sebastian Aho had a second-period goal, and Seth Jarvis added a goal and two assists as the Hurricaes won their fourth in a row, a streak in which they’ve outscored opponents, 17-6.

Sam Montembeau­lt made 37 saves and Montreal ended New Jersey’s six-game winning streak with the victory in Newark, N.J. The Canadiens won big despite mustering only 18 shots.

Red Wings 3, Capitals 1:

Detroit won for the sixth time in seven games and moved ahead of Washington as both chase the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Pius Suter scored twice and Robert Hagg ended a 75- game goal drought. Washington lost its fifth in a row in regulation — its longest stretch without a point since January 2014.

Lightning 5, Ducks 1: Nick Paul scored the first of four Tampa Bay goals in a span of 5:55 in the second period, Brayden Point scored his 200th NHL goal and Tampa Bay won at home to hand Anaheim its sixth loss in a row. The Lightning are 14-0-1 in their past 15 games at Amalie Arena.

Maple Leafs 6, Sabres 3:

Ryan O’Reilly, playing his third game since being acquired from St. Louis, scored twice in a 37-second span of the first period and added an empty-net goal for a hat trick in the win in Buffalo, N.Y. O’Reilly also had two assists.

Notes

Colorado defenseman Cale Makar is back in concussion protocol after taking contact to his head Saturday for a second time in less than two weeks. Makar will miss at least the next two games for the Avalanche.
