Shiffrin claims Cup overall title

Skier remains one off Stenmark mark

Mikaela Shiffrin accomplish­ed what she called “the big, big goal for me this season.”

While she didn’t win a World Cup downhill in Kvitfjell, Norway — she finished fifth— she did lock up her fifth overall World Cup title, widely regarded as ski racing’s biggest prize.

“Ihad such a big focus on it that I was even talking about itin interviews in the beginning of the season,” she said. “Normally I don’t talk about itso much because it takes a longtime to figure out if you cando it.”

That accomplish­ed, her quest to tie Ingemar Stemark’s record for most wins in Cup history (86) continues Sunday when she competes ina super-G.

Saturday’s race was won by home favorite Kajsa Vickh off Lie, who became the first Norwegian woman to win a down hill in the 56-year history of World Cup skiing.

Daniil Medvedevw on his 18 th tour-level title and third in a row by beating And rey Rub lev 62,6-2 in the final of the Dubai Championsh­ips in United Arab Emirates. The victory extended Medvedev’ s winning streak to 14 matches.

Auto racing

Defending NASCAR Cup

Series champion Joey Logano, who has won three of thepast eight races at Las Vegas, won the pole for Sunday’s race there. Logano, driving the Team Penske No. 22Ford, had a speed of 186.053 mph.

•NASCAR driver Chase Elliotthad successful surgery for a fractured tibia in his left leg Friday night, hours after a snowboardi­ng accident in Colorado.He will be out indefinite­ly, beginning with Sunday’s race at Las Vegas. Josh Berry will drive the No. 9Chevrolet.

•Romain Grosjean opened his third season in IndyCar by winning the pole for the St. Petersburg Grand Prix, leading an Andretti Autosport sweep of the front row. Teammate Colton Herta will start onthe outside front.

• World champion Max Verstappen took pole position ahead of Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez for the season-opening Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix.

Golf

Kurt Kitayama steadied himself down the stretch, closing with two birdies over the last three holes to escape with an even-par 72 and a one-shot lead in the Arnold Palmer Invitation­al at Bay Hill in Orlando, Fla. Chasing him as he goes for his first PGA Tour victory Sunday will be Scottie Scheffler

and Viktor Hovland, both a shot back.

•Defending champion Jin YoungKo shot a second consecutiv­e7-under 65 to take a two-strokel ead over Nelly Kordain to the final round of the LPGA’s Women’s World Championsh­ip in Singapore.

TheNew England Patriots are expected to release veteran quarter back Brian Hoyer, according to a report inthe Boston Herald. Hoyer, 37,has had three different stints with the Patriots.
