Webber sinks 3 to save Lions

South Fayette gets trip to state semis

Senior guard Maddie Webber’s 3-point basket at the buzzer gave WPIAL champion South Fayette a stunning 4037 victory against Erie Cathedral Prep in a PIAA Class 5A girls basketball quarterfin­al at Sharon High School.

South Fayette (27-2) trailed 27-15 a minute and a half into the second half before making its comeback against the District 6 champion Ramblers (25-2), who had an 18game winning streak.

The Lions held Cathedral Prep to two second-half field goals and none in the fourth quarter.

The Lions will meet Oakland Catholic in a state semifinal in a rematch of the WPIAL title game on Tuesday. South Fayette is riding a 21game winning streak.

Webber led South Fayette with 15 points. Erica Hall added 11 and Ava Leroux scored seven, all coming in the final quarter when South Fayette outscored Cathedral Prep 16-8.

Class 4A

North Catholic 60, Wyomissing Area 27: The Trojans (25-3) routed the District 3 champion Spartans (28-3) at Bald Eagle Area High School. Alayna Rocco led North Catholic with 19 points. Dacia Lewandowsk­i added 16 points for the Trojans, who made 10 3-pointers. North Catholic led 44-15 at halftime and 57-19 after three quarters.

Blackhawk 40, Fairview 34: The Cougars rallied to defeat Fairview (21-7) of District 10 at Sharon. Blackhawk trailed 28-27 after three quarters. The Cougars’ victory set up a rematch against North Catholic in the PIAA semifinals. The Trojans topped Blackhawk (24-4) for the WPIAL championsh­ip by 16 points. Against Fairview, Blackhawk was led by Kassie Potts and Alena Fusetti with 15 points apiece.

Class 1A Union 43, Williamsbu­rg 37:

The WPIAL champion Scotties (21-6) staged a second-half comeback to earn a first-ever trip to the state semifinals by upsetting Williamsbu­rg at Armstrong High School. Union has won consecutiv­e PIAA games after trailing at the half. The Scotties began the third quarter on a 20-3 run. Zoe Lepri led Union with 14 points. Kayla Fruehstorf­er added nine, all from 3-point range. Her sister Kylie Fruehstorf­er added seven. Kelly Cleaver also tallied nine, all from the free throw line. Four of Cleaver’s shots from the line in the final minute held off a Blue Pirates comeback.
