Boil-water advisory continues for parts of Pittsburgh

-

The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority told residents in several eastern neighborhoods Saturday to continue boiling water following a water main break on Friday.

The authority late Saturday afternoon said the water main had been repaired, but the boil- water advisory remained in effect until further notice.

Residents of Garfield, Central Lawrenceville, East Liberty, Highland Park, Morningside, Stanton Heights and Upper Lawrenceville fell under the advisory.

The PWSA said the break in a 20- inch water main affected the Garfield Tank system. The leak was isolated about 2 p. m. Friday so repairs could be made. But when the leak was isolated, water pressure dropped in the affected neighborhoods.

A PWSA news release said that in a water pressure loss, contaminants can enter drinking water. When water pressure is restored, the authority said residents of about 4,400 households should boil their drinking water until further notice.

In the meantime, the authority said it would immediately place water tanks for consumers at:

• Oranmore Street at Sommerville Street

• Cornwall Street at North Atlantic Avenue

• Stanton Avenue at Woodbine Street

• Hawthorne Street at Amsterdam Avenue

• Callowhill Street at North Highland Avenue

• Heberton Street at Hampton Street

More buffalo locations will be added soon, PWSA said.

Customers should check pgh2o. com/ boilwater for updated information.

And a searchable map of the impacted area can be found at PWSA Boil Water Area.

The authority said its crews worked around the clock to fix the break and continued to test to determine when the water is safe to consume.

The advisory applies to water used for consumption. Customers within the impacted area should do the following before using water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice:

Boil tap water vigorously for at least one minute prior to using it for drinking or cooking ( the minute starts when the water begins to bubble). This includes water used for brushing teeth, making ice, washing raw foods, preparation of drinks, and water for pets.

Wait for the water to cool before using it, or store it in the refrigerator in a clean container.
