Yankees nosedive continues

Drop to .500 with loss to Braves

Bryce Elder pitched seven brilliant innings in a combined one-hitter, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Marcell Ozuna hit home runs and the Atlanta Braves shut out the reeling New York Yankees, 5-0, Tuesday night in Atlanta.

The last-place Yankees dropped to 12-22 since July 4, falling to .500 (6060).

Ozuna extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a three-run homer in the first inning of Luis Severino (2-8) — his 24th homer of the season.

Elder (9-4) allowed only DJ LeMahieu’s single in the second. He was erased on one of four double plays New York hit into. The shutout was the Braves’ 12th of the season.

Guardians 3, Reds 0: Rookie Logan Allen (6-5) allowed four hits in six innings, Kole Calhoun hit a two-run single in the first and Cleveland won consecutiv­e games for the first time in three weeks. José Ramírez returned from a two-game suspension and went 2 for 4.

Twins 5, Tigers 3: Matt Wallner hit a grand slam to cap a five-run sixth inning as AL Central-leading Minnesota won at home. The home run is the rookie Wallner’s ninth in 38 games. Rangers 7, Angels 3:

Corey Seager hit two homers and drove in five runs and AL West-leading Texas anded slumping LOs Angeles its 11th loss in 14 games since deciding to go all-in at the trade deadline and keep Shohei Ohtani. Jordan Montgomery (8-10) struck out nine in getting the win.

Red Sox 5, Nationals 4: Alex Verdugo led off the game with a homer and the Boston remained three games behind Toronto for the AL’s last wild- card spot.

Blue Jays 2, Phillies 1: Cavan Biggio was hit in the foot by a pitch from Seranthony Dominguez (2-3) with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to force in the tiebreakin­g run.

Astros 6, Marlins 5: Kyle Tucker hit a tiebreakin­g homer in the seventh inning and Houston rallied past Miami.

WhiteSox 5, Cubs 3: Luis Robert Jr. hit a tiebreakin­g solo homer in the seventh inning — his 32nd home run of the season.

Alyssa Nakken, the Giants’ fourth-year coach. is pregnant. Nakken, 33, became the first woman on an MLB coaching staff when the Giants hired her to Gabe Kapler’s initial staff in January 2020. She later became the first woman to coach in an onfield role when she filled in for Antoan Richardson at first base in April 2022, a moment that she characteri­zed as “just my job.”

• AL West- leading Texas Rangers signed former PIrates infielder Josh Harrison to a minor league contract, two weeks after he was released by the Philadelph­ia Phillies. Harrison hit .204 with two homers and 10 RBIs this season for the Phillies.

• Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera hit his 509th career homer — a two-run shot vs. the Twins — to tie Gary Sheffield for 26th all time. He is two behind Mel Ott for 25th. The two RBIs gave him 1,867 for his career, one behind Mel Ott for 11th all time.
