Washington ground game in control in victory

Fifth- ranked Washington got three touchdown runs from Ruben Gordon to run past the host Class 1A Monessen Greyhounds, 49-20, in Friday’s WPIAL football season opener for the Class 2A Little Prexies.

Washington outrushed Monessen, 246-87, and picked up 18 first downs to 12 for the Greyhounds. Gordon scored on runs covering 13, 17 and 31 yards.

Cayden Cook also scored twice for the Little Prexies. The first touchdown occurred on a 43-yard intercepti­on return and the second on a 15yard run from scrimmage. Other Class 2A games BeaverFall­s 28, Blackhawk

7: The No. 1 Tigers trounced neighborho­od rival Class 4A Blackhawk at home. Beaver Falls led 28-0 at halftime.

Waynesburg Carmichael­s 0: The visiting Raiders shut out the Class 1A Mikes as Breydon Woods scored a pair of touchdowns for Waynesburg. Woods rushed for 132 yards. Jacob Stephenson passed for 143 yards and two touchdowns.

Ellwood City 27, Brentwood 26: The Wolverines escaped with a narrow win over the host Spartans in a nonconfere­nce battle of Class 2A opponents. Ellwood City led 19-7 after three quarters and survived a three-touchdown rally by Brentwood in the fourth quarter. Luciano Gagric scored two touchdowns for the Wolverines.

Apollo-Ridge 18, Leechburg 16: The Vikings edged the Class 1A Blue Devils on the road. Alex Wurmb returned a blocked field goal attempt 80 yards for a touchdown. Karter Schrock 35, scored two touchdowns on short runs for the Vikings. Leechburg had a chance to send the game to overtime, but a 2-point conversion pass failed in the fourth quarter after Jayden Floyd threw a 42-yard TD pass to Sebastian Mason.

Class 1A

Our Lady Sacred Heart 32, Shenango 10: Vann Kavals passed for 350 yards and four touchdowns to lead the No. 3 Chargers to an easy home win against the Wildcats. Kavals completed 19 of 27 passes. Dereon Greer caught three of the touchdown passes on scoring plays of 12, 23 and 62 yards. Ethan Gardner caught the other touchdown pass on a 68- yard play. Kavals also scored on a 1-yard run.

Riverview 41, Beth-Center 20:

Carlo Buzzatto’s three touchdowns led the visiting Raiders to an impressive win against the Bulldogs. Buzzatto scored on runs of 3, 3 and 12 yards. Riverview broke away with a 15-0 fourth quarter run in a game that saw the lead change hands three times. Teagan Veatch led Beth-Center with a 72-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Landon Johnson scored on a 2-point conversion run and a 24-yard touchdown run for Riverview.

Bentworth 42, Brownsvill­e 6: Vitali Daniels passed for 270 yards and four touchdowns to lead the visiting Bearcats to a win against the Falcons. Ben Hays caught three touchdown passes covering 55, 45 and 70 yards. Daniels also rushed for 55 yards.

Carlynton4­6, Carrick 6: The Cougars, winless last season, started off this season on the right foot with an easy home victory against the District 8 independen­t Raiders.

Mapletown 29, Avella 12: The Maples came back from a 6-0 halftime deficit to win at home against the Eagles. A.J. Vanata scored on two touchdown runs and passed for another, covering 26 yards to Roger Gradek.

Fort Cherry 42, Northgate

6: Matt Sieg, a 1,000-yard rusher and 1,000-yard passer last season as a freshman, led the Rangers to a comfortabl­e win at Northgate. Sieg passed for 70 yards yards and rushed for 196 more. Sieg scored on runs of 49, 6 and 22 yards. He also threw a 21-yard scoring pass to Evan Rogers.

California 37, Frazier 0:

The Trojans blanked the Commodores in a non-conference home contest.

Laurel 37, New Brighton 6:

The Spartans throttled the Class 2A Lions during a nonconfere­nce victory on the road.

Jeannette 16, Burrell 13:

The Jayhawks picked up a road win at the expense of the Class 2A Buccaneers on a late fourth quarter field goal.
