Boys athlete of the week

The Post-Gazette’s top male performer from the past seven days

- — By Keith Barnes

The past week: Wrona had a good performance in Mohawk’s win on the football field against Quaker Valley Friday, completing 10 of 15 passes for 189 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-8 victory vs. the Quakers.

Check this out: In two games, Wrona has thrown for 564 yards and 10 touchdowns. There’s never a time when Wrona, a senior, isn’t busy. He is a four-sport athlete. Not only is he the Warriors quarterback, but he’s also a member of the golf team and was a 2022 qualifier for the PIAA Class 2A championships. He’s also a starter on the basketball team, for whom he averaged 16 points and made all-section. Beyond that, he is an outstanding baseball player who has committed to play at Youngstown State.

To what do you attribute your success on the football field this year? I think, compared to last year, being another year older and getting more in depth with the offense. I that’s definitely been a big part of it.

How do you manage golf and football practices? So I don’t get to any golf practices. On days of golf matches, I call coach (Tim) McCutcheon the night before and let him know I’m going to be a little late. He couldn’t be any better with me about it. He’s like, “Go play well, and when you get here, you get here.”

You don’t see too many quarterbacks also playing on the golf team. I won’t lie. It’s a lot.

What’s your handicap? If we’re out playing nine, I’m out shooting in the 30s. If not, I’m not happy with myself. I’m probably shooting 1to-3 over [par].

What made you try golf? Last year was the first year I tried it. I hurt my shoulder sophomore year and I was only playing offense, playing quarterback, so I had a little more time to practice. I made it to Penn State and I didn’t play too well there. I didn’t expect to win there anyway. It was just crazy how it all came about.

Youplay four sports. Which is your favorite?

I get that question all the time. Whatever one I’m playing is the one I’m fully into.

What do you like better, throwing a touchdown pass or hitting a home run?

Oh man. I’ve thrown a lot more touchdown passes than I’ve hit home runs, so I’d have to say home runs.

If you could have your ideal NIL deal, who would it be with?

Probably some dessert place. I’ve got a big sweet tooth. If I could get some cookies and all that, I’d be all in.

Do you have to refrain from sweets during the season? I don’t. I just eat them when I want to.
