Penn State DE Robinson declares for draft

Penn State defensive end Chop Robinson declared for the 2024 NFL draft. Robinson made his announceme­nt Tuesday on his social media platforms.

Robinson had three sacks and 18 quarterbac­k hurries this season. while starting every game.

“From one dream to the next, I am excited to continue this next chapter,” Robinson wrote.

Robinson has been projected as a first-round pick. He doesn’t plan to play in the Nittany Lions’ game against Mississipp­i in the Peach Bowl.

He had the sixth-highest pass rush grade among players with over 100 pass-rush snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. In 35 games in three seasons, Robinson had 60 tackles, 20 for loss, and 11.5 sacks.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that he wants the state to set aside $1 million for “any litigation expenses that may come as a result of this really, really poor decision by the College Football Playoff” to snub undefeated ACC champion Florida State.

• Iowa defensive coordinato­r Phil Parker is the winner of the Broyles Award, which is presented annually to the top assistant coach in FBS. Parker, 60, is in his 25th season on Iowa’s coaching staff and 12th as defensive coordinato­r. The Hawkeyes (10-3) allowed just 15 touchdowns in 13 games this season.

• Missouri running back Cody Schrader won the Burlsworth Trophy, given to the nation’s best player who started his Division I career as a a walk-on. Schrader leads Division I with 124.9 yards rushing per game this season.

• Florida State quarterbac­k Jordan Travis is The Associated Press offensive player of the year in the ACC, while N.C. State linebacker Payton Wilson was the unanimous choice as the league’s top defensive player.

Baseball

The Los Angeles Dodgers held a meeting with two-way star Shohei Ohtani at Dodger Stadium last week, manager Dave Roberts revealed at MLB’s winter meetings in Nashville, Tenn. According to Roberts, Dodgers officials spent two to three hours with Ohtani, who last month won his second American League Most Valuable Player award with the Angels.

• The New York Yankees were said to be searching for left-handed hitting outfielder­s, and they landed one in outfielder Alex Verdugo via a trade with the rival Boston Red Sox. Verdugo slashed .264/.324/.421 with 13 homers and 54 RBIs last season.

• The Tampa Bay Rays signed reliever Chris Devenski to a $1.1 million, one-year contract with a club option for 2025. Devenski, 33, split the 2023 season between the Los Angeles Angels and the Rays, going 6-4 with a 4.46 ERA in 38 games. He was released by the Angels on Aug. 29 and signed the same day with Tampa Bay.
