Berger leads Thomas Jefferson to a win

Teams with Prosser for 49 points in nonsection victory vs. Baldwin

Consider it a warning to the rest of WPIAL Class 5A. Thomas Jefferson boys basketball is a team to watch this season.

That is apparent after Thomas Jefferson knocked off Baldwin, 78-67, in a WPIAL non-section game Tuesday night. Baldwin came into the game with a 2-0 record and the No. 5 spot in the Post-Gazette’s WPIAL Class 6A rankings.

Thomas Jefferson ( 3- 0) jumped out to a 12-point lead after the first quarter and was ahead by 10 points at halftime. Forward Evan Berger, one of the WPIAL’s top seniors, scored 32 points for Thomas Jefferson and Noah Prosser added 17. Nate Richards led Baldwin (2-1) with 26.

Other top boys games

• In one of the wildest games in the first week of the season, visiting Mt. Lebanon ( 1- 0) defeated North Allegheny, 83-80, in a non-section game in triple overtime. North Allegheny (0-1) hit a half-court shot at the end of regulation and a 3-pointer at the end of the first overtime. Mt. Lebanon scored off a putback at the buzzer of the second overtime. But Mt. Lebanon finally pulled out the win. Riley Farabaugh scored 32 for Mt. Lebanon while Anthony Sciote led North Allegheny with 26.

• In a WPIAL Class 4A Section 2 game, No. 1 Lincoln Park went on the road and crushed Beaver, 97-67. Lincoln Park (3-0) led at halftime, 60-34. Six players scored in double figures for Lincoln Park and senior guard Brandin Cummings led with 27 points, including 18 in the first quarter. Brady Mayo had 27 for Beaver (2-1).

• Mohawk (0-1), the No. 1ranked Class 3A team, went down to defeat at Blackhawk, 74-68. Justin Shanor scored 25 for Blackhawk (2-1) and pulled down 20 rebounds.

• Brayden Stone’s layup at the buzzer gave Penn-Trafford (2-1) a 49-48 victory against host Norwin (1-2).

• Alex Lowry scored 13 points to help Gateway (2-1) to a 56-51 victory against host Allderdice (1-1), the No. 1 City League team.

Top girls games

• In a battle of No. 1ranked teams, McKeesport (3-0) led by only one after the first quarter, but came on strong to post a 56-37 victory against visiting Blackhawk (21), the No. 1 Class 4A team. McKeesport, No. 1 in Class 5A, got 17 points from Brooke Evans.

• Defending WPIAL and PIAA Class 5A champion South Fayette (2-0) knocked off visiting Class 6A No. 2 Upper St. Clair, 58-55, in overtime. Rylee Kalocay scored 30 for Upper St. Clair (1-2). Juliette Leroux led South Fayette with 22 and Erica Hall 16.

Stars of the night

• Yough’s Terek Crosby continued his hot start to the season when he poured in 30 points in a 51- 41 victory against host South Park (2-1). Crosby had 32 and 43 points in the first two games for Yough (3-0).

• Freshman Peyton Lynch scored 23 points as the Allderdice girls defeated Gateway, 58-50.
