Woodland Hills hands Shaler its first defeat

Scoop Smith scored 22 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, as Woodland Hills pulled one of the biggest upsets of the season with a 5246 victory Friday against previously unbeaten Shaler in a Section 2 game played at Woodland Hills.

Shaler (11-1, 1-1) entered the game ranked No. 2 in Class 5A.

Woodland Hills (4-8, 1-1) had its largest lead at 32-21 with 7:07 left in the third quarter.

Shaler cut the lead to 41-40 with 5:27 left in fourth quarter, but the Wolverines went on a 9-2 run to open a 50-42 lead with 1:29 left.

Brandon London led Shaler with 20 points.

Other boys games

• Billy Schaeffer scored 20 points and was 14 of 16 from the foul line as 3A No. 1 Deer Lakes (8-2, 3-0) handed No. 3 Burrell (7-1, 3-1) its first loss in a Section 3 showdown of ranked teams, 65-43. Burrell’s Tucker Bitar led all scorers with 24 points.

• Ama Sow tallied 22 points as 4A No. 3 Montour (7-1, 2-0) dominated No. 5 South Allegheny (8-3, 02) in Section 4 game played at South Allegheny. Jake Wolfe and Kaleb Platz added 16 and 15 respective­ly. Drew Cook topped the Gladiators with 17 points.

• Brody Barber scored 26 points and Nate Girod added 21 as 6A No. 1 Mt. Lebanon (10-1, 2-0) recorded a 67-50 win against Hempfield (3-9, 0-2) in Section 2. Hempfield was led by Danny Husenits, who had 15.

• Tyree Turner scored 25 points as 2A No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic (11-2, 4-0) dominated No. 5 Jeannette (7-4, 2-1) in a Section 3 game played at Jeannette. Liam Gallagher and Franco Alvarez each had 12 points for the Centurions. Kymone Brown topped the Jayhawks with 16.

• David Fleming scored 15 points and Aaron Smith had 14 as West Mifflin ( 7- 4, 1- 1) edged visiting Quaker Valley (6-4, 1-1) in Class 4A Section 4. Quaker Valley’s Joseph Coyle led all scorers with 24 points.

• Monessen ( 8- 1, 2- 0) outscored Jefferson-Morgan (8-4, 11) 22-4 in the fourth quarter to break open a one-point game and record a 60-41 win in a Class 1A Section 2 game played at Monessen. The Greyhounds, ranked No. 3, were led by Lorenzo Gardner (25) and Devontae Robinson ( 10). John Woodward and Jase Bedilion had 11 each for the Rockets.

• Ty Keffer scored 29 points and Noah Felentzer tallied 22 to lead Southmorel­and (11-1, 1-1) to a 7770 victory against visiting Elizabeth Forward (9-2 1-1) in Class 4A Section 3. Isaiah Turner topped Elizabeth Forward with 25, while Cy Herchelroa­th added 17.

Girls games

• Trinity (9-1, 2-0), ranked No. 4 in Class 5A, outscored Moon 35-21 in the first half and rolled to a 63-46 win against Moon (7-3, 0-2) in Section 4. Aggie Niccolai topped the Hillers with 19 points and Macie Justice added 14. Jaedin Griggs led the Tigers with 14 points.

• Mallory Daly scored 28 points to lead Seton LaSalle (8-3, 1-1) to a 65-46 win against Keystone Oaks (9-2, 1-1) in Class 3A Section 2. Addie Lonergan added 17 points and connected on five 3’s. Keystone Oaks was led by Bailey Rieg, who had 15 points.

• Natalie Wetzel scored 30 points, more than half of Peters Township’s output, in a 59-50 win against visiting Plum in a non-league game. Gamma Walker added 14 points for the Indians (12-0), who are ranked No. 1 in Class 6A. Plum (7-4) was led by Riley Stephans (20).

• Maddie Syka scored 22 points as 5A No. 2 Lincoln Park (11-0, 2-0) remained unbeaten with a narrow 50-49 win against South Fayette (64, 1-1) in Section 4. Haylie Lamonde had 15 points for the Lions.

Star of the night

Courtney Wallace recorded a triple double with 15 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists as Class 1A No. 2 Neighborho­od Academy (7-4, 1-1) dominated No. 4 Aquinas Academy (8-2, 1-1) in Section 3. Wallace also scored his 1000th career point on a 3-point basket late in the first quarter. Kedron Gilmore topped Neighborho­od with 21 points. Jacob Guillen topped Aquinas Academy with 19 points.
