No.1 Purdue escapes No. 9 Illinois after rush

Trey Kaufman-Renn scored a season- high 23 points, Lance Smith added 17 and top-ranked Purdue (14-1, 3-1 Big Ten) held off a late charge to beat visiting No. 9 Illinois (11-3, 2-1) 83-78 on Friday night.

The Boilermake­rs extended their winning streak to seven games by winning the first top-10 matchup at Mackey Arena since Jan. 1, 2010.

Reigning national player of the year Zach Edey had 10 points and 15 rebounds, becoming the second Purdue player with 1,000 career boards.

UConn 88, Butler 81: Alex Karaban scored 20 points, Tristen Newton added 17 and No. 4 UConn (13-2, 3-1 Big East) came back to beat host Butler (10-5, 1-3) for its third straight victory without injured center Donovan Clingan. The Huskies trailed 42-35 at halftime but shot 55% from the field overall.

Top 25 Women’s games Iowa 103, Rutgers 69:

Caitlin Clark had 29 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds for her 14th career triple-double to lead No. 4 Iowa (15-1, 4-0 Big Ten) to a win against host Rutgers (6-11, 0-4) as the Hawkeyes have won 12 straight games. Kate Martin added 17 points for the Hawkeyes.

Colorado 75, Arizona 74:

Jaylynn Sherrod scored 18 points, including the go-ahead three-point play with 1:50 left, to give No. 5 Colorado (12-1, 2-0 Pac-12) a win at Arizona (9-5, 1-1) to prepare for their rivalry match against Arizona State on Sunday.

Utah 58, Arizona State 41:

Kennady McQueen scored 12 points, Jenna Johnson added 10 and No. 15 Utah (11-3, 11 Pac-12) beat Arizona State (8-6, 0-2). Utah limited Arizona State to just 14 points in the first half — with seven coming in each quarter.

Ohio State 90, Northweste­rn 60:

Jacy Sheldon scored 18 points, Celeste Taylor added 15 points and No. 20 Ohio State (11-3, 2 - 1 Big Ten) beat Northweste­rn (6-9, 1-3).
