French golfer makes PGA Tour history with win

Matthieu Pavon made an 8-foot putt for a dramatic birdie on No. 18 at Torrey Pines South for a one-shot victory in the Farmers Insurance Open Saturday in San Diego. In doing so, he became the first Frenchman to win on the PGA Tour.

The birdie on 18 was the only one on the back nine for Pavon.

His final-round 3-under 69 put him at 13 under, one stroke better than Nicolai Hojgaard. Pavon was two shots ahead of Stephan Jaeger, who led after the second and third rounds.

“I have no words. It is amazing,” Pavon said.

Nelly Korda shot a 3-under 68 with an eagle-birdie finish to take a four-shot lead into the final round of the LPGA Drive On Championsh­ip in Bradenton, Fla. The eight-time LPGA Tour winner is 13 under — four shots better than Lydia Ko, Megan Khang and Ayaka Furue.

Less than a week after firing defensive coordinato­r Sean Desai, the Philadelph­ia Eagles hired Vic Fangio to fill the vacancy. On Wednesday, Fangio mutually parted ways with the Miami Dolphins, where he occupied the same role in 2023. Fangio, 65, is an eastern Pennsylvan­ia native.

Figure skating

Two days after they began developing flu-like symptoms, longtime ice dancers Madison Chock and Evan Bates skated a free dance at the U.S. championsh­ips in Columbus, Ohio, that was good enough for gold. They scored 215.92 points to earn their third consecutiv­e title and fifth overall.

Horse racing

National Treasure, a Bob Baffert-trained Preakness winner ridden by Flavien Pratt, dug deep in the stretch to win the $3 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Fla. National Treasure — the 5-2 favorite — held off Buscador in the stretch run. Crupi, a 30-1 shot, was third.

Baseball

Former Pirates second baseman Adam Frazier agreed to a $4.5 million, oneyear contract with the Kansas City Royals. Frazier, 32, spent last season with the AL East champion Orioles, hitting .240 with career highs of 13 homers and 60 RBIs across 141 games.

• Joey Gallo finalized a $5 million, one-year contract with the Washington Nationals. Gallo hit .177 with 21 homers, 40 RBIs and 142 strikeouts last year with the Minnesota Twins.

Hockey

Maureen Murphy scored at 3:30 of overtime to give Montreal a 2-1 PWHL victory against Ottawa in front of 8,646 fans at Place Bell in Laval, Quebec — the largest crowd for a profession­al women’s hockey game in Canada. ... Hilary Knight scored in overtime to give Boston a 4-3 victory at home against Minnesota.
