11th-seeded Rebels win big

Seton LaSalle avenges playoff loss in 2023 by ousting Waynesburg

Waynesburg and Seton LaSalle got to know each other well when they played in the opening round of the 2023 WPIAL Class 3A playoffs.

It was a game the Rebels couldn’t forget, as the Raiders ended their season. This time, however, Seton LaSalle turned the tables and sent Waynesburg into the offseason Saturday.

Sophomore guard Addie Lonergan hit six 3-pointers as part of her game-high 27 points and Mallory Daly and Tiara Curry each went for 14, as No. 11 Seton LaSalle (138) pulled off the upset with a 57-36 blowout of No. 6 Waynesburg (20-3) in the first round of the tournament.

Neshannock 63, Brownsvill­e 36: The fourth-seeded Lancers won a postseason game for the fourth consecutiv­e year. Neshannock (16-7) senior Kaitlyn Fries led all scorers with 15 points, and sophomore guard Payton Newman posted a doubledoub­le with 13 points and 12 rebounds in a dominating win against No. 13 Brownsvill­e (12-9).

Beaver Falls 68, McGuey

38: The Tigers moved into the quarterfin­als for the first time since 2021 with a runningclo­ck victory against the Highlander­s. Senior forward Avina Norman scored a game-high 24 points and sophomore Taylor Pullen knocked down 21 to lead the attack for No. 3 Beaver Falls (15-6). Junior forward Madison Gaso paced No. 14 McGuffey (14-7) with 14 points.

Keystone Oaks 49, Burrell 34: The Bucs looked like a potential sleeper coming into the tournament, but the Golden Eagles had their way from the opening tip. Laney Wagner scored 15 points and Bailey Rieg chipped in 12 to lead the attack for No. 8 Keystone Oaks (16-6). McKenna Miller led No. 9 Burrell (16-5) with 13.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 46, Ellwood City 41:

The 10th-seeded Wolverines gave the No. 7 Chargers all they could handle before Morgan O’Brien broke a 41-41 tie late in the fourth quarter and she scored the final five points to win the game. O’Brien finished with a teamhigh 14 while Claudia Ierullo finished with 12 for OLSH (16-7). Kayla Jones had a game-high 16 in the loss for Ellwood City (15-8).

South Park 37, Mount Pleasant 21: The No. 5 Eagles (16-7) broke open what was a one-point game at the half to send the 12th-seeded Vikings (14-8) out of the postseason. Brooke Paylo led a balanced South Park scoring attack with 10 points, while Mount Pleasant sophomore Morgan Gesinski paced all scorers with 11 in the loss.

Avonworth 64, ApolloRidg­e 13: Avonworth (20-1) took barely an hour to move into the quarterfin­als, as Rebecca Goetz scored 19 of her 21 points in the first half, Greta O’Brien hit for 16 and Emma Obersteine­r scored 14 off the bench. Apollo-Ridge (814) trailed 42-5.

Shady Side Academy 53, Mohawk 42: Sophomore guard Maggie Spell scored 23 points, including her 1,000th career point, to lead the No. 2 Bulldogs (20-2), the only team left from Section 3.
