More Western Pa. Family Dollar locations to close
More Family Dollar locations are set to close in Western Pennsylvania, following an announcement last month that the company will shutter more than 1,000 locations over the next few years.
At a small shopping center in Duquesne, a Family Dollar sits between an already empty storefront and a clothing store. The outside of the location, at 27 Duquesne Blvd., is draped with a “store closing” banner and the shelves inside are almost empty.
The store was not given a closing date by its management, said a store associate. It will officially shut down when all of the merchandise in the store is sold, she explained.
In Sheraden, the Family Dollar located at 2928 Sheraden Blvd. is set to close on April 14., according to a store associate.
It’s not clear how many Western Pennsylvania stores will close, and Family Dollar officials did not respond to questions about future closures.
Known closures include locations at 3300 Penn Ave. in Lawrenceville, which was shuttered in late March, and 400 East Pittsburgh St., in Greensburg, which is set to close on April 18.
Virginia- based Dollar Tree, which owns Family Dollar, said the closures are the result of a review of its stores.
“We initiated a comprehensive review of our store portfolio to identify and address underperforming stores and invest in improved store standards and growth,” a Dollar Tree representative confirmed in an email to the Post-Gazette last month.
Closures are also starting in the eastern half of the state.
Family Dollar filed a Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry in advance of the closing of six stores in Philadelphia. The stores will cease business on April 20, impacting 62 workers.
“Family Dollar and Dollar Tree stores are important to thousands of communities across this country,” a Dollar Tree representative said in an email to the Post-Gazette, last month. “We owe it to those we serve to position all of our stores for success and meet the expectations of our valued customers and associates.”
