Thomas Jefferson’s Siemon shuts out Chartiers Valley

- From local dispatches

Thomas Jefferson has only played five games against WPIAL teams this season. But if that early sample is any indication, the Jaguars will be a handful as the year progresses.

Senior starter J.J. Siemon gave Chartiers Valley hitters fits as he twirled a masterful one-hitter while striking out nine to lead Class 4A No. 4 Thomas Jefferson (8-0, 2-0) to a 1-0 victory against Chartiers Valley (2-1, 0-1) in a Section 3 game.

Thomas Jefferson has outscored its five WPIAL opponents, 47-5. The Jaguars 9.5 average runs per game is the best in the top three classifications.

Other baseball

• It looked like it would be a really good matchup of 5-0 teams when Serra Catholic hosted Riverview. But the Class 2A No. 2 Eagles (6-0, 3-0) scored 11 runs on three hits in the fifth inning and pulled away for a 21-4 romp against the No. 5 Raiders (51, 2-1).

• Ethan Septak had two hits and drove in four to lead Class 5A No. 3 Penn-Trafford (7-1, 5-1) to an 8-0 home win against Section 1 rival Plum (4-4, 2-2). Dom Delio allowed two hits and picked up the win for the Warriors.

• Waynesburg (3-0, 2-0) picked up three runs in the top of the 10th inning then held on to beat Class 3A No. 5 Yough (2-4, 2-1), 6-3, in the first half of a home-andhome Section 4 showdown. The two teams will meet again Wednesday.

• West Allegheny got all of its offense during a six-run outburst in the fourth inning and junior pitcher Mason Gass made it stand up as he scattered eight hits in 6 2/3 innings as the Class 5A No. 2 Indians (4-1, 2-1) slipped past Moon (3-4, 1-2), 6-4, in a Section 3 matchup.

Softball

• Sophomore hurler Bria Bosiljevac tossed a seven - inning perfect game and struck out 16 to lead Class 5A No. 1 Shaler (5-0, 2-0) to a 2-0 victory against No. 5 North Hills (4-2, 1-1) in an early season battle for first place in Section 1. Bosiljevac has yet to allow a run this season and has only given up six hits in five games.

• Sophomore Lily Duffill hit three homers for the second time this season while junior pitcher Taylor Walsh led off the game with an inside-the-park home run and fanned nine to lead Class 4A No 4 Chartiers Valley (3-1, 10) to a 16-0, four-inning victory against Ambridge (0-5, 0-2) in the Colts’ Section 3 opener.
