Canon-McMillan hands Hempfield 1st loss of ’24

Seb Shulsky pitched a complete game while striking out five and Teddy Burke hit a two-run homer, as Canon-McMillan (4-6, 4-4) knocked Class 6A No. 3 Hempfield (11-1, 7-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 12-2 sixinning upset of the Spartans in a baseball game played Tuesday at Canon-McMillan.

Sam Meredith had three hits, including two doubles, and Cam Russell drove in four runs for Canon-McMillan. Burke and Kolton Smittle also had two hits for the Big Macs.

Other baseball games

• A five-run third inning was all No. 3 ranked Montour (9-1, 6-0) needed in its 8- 1 win against visiting Hopewell (6-5, 3-3) in Class 4A Section 1. A two-run single by Michael Ivanoff keyed the five-run rally. Jake Robinson pitched six innings of two hit, one run ball to pick up the victory for the Spartans.

• Fox Chapel, ranked No. 3 in Class 5A, scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out a 4-2 road victory thus handing Franklin Regional (7-4, 5-1) its first Section 1 loss. Jeremy Haigh pitched six innings, allowing only two hits and one run while striking out nine batters, to pick up the victory for the Foxes. Blake Krushinski had two hits for Fox Chapel.

• East Allegheny and Burrell split a Class 3 Section 3 doublehead­er. The No. 2 ranked Wildcats (6-1, 3-1) posted a 1-0 victory in the first game. Joe Connors and Mike Cahill combined for the 2-hit shutout and combined to strike out 10 batters. Burrell posted a (4-5, 4-4) a 4-2 victory in the nightcap with A.J. McLafferty picking up the victory.

• Avella broke an 8-all tie with six runs in the top of the seventh inning, as the Eagles (6-1, 5-1) knocked off unbeaten Fort Cherry (5-1, 31), 14-8, in Class 1A Section 1. Bryce Wright had three hits and picked up the victory for Avella.

• Jesse Fedorek pitched six innings of one-hit, onerun ball while striking out five batters, as Class 2A No. 1 Seton LaSalle ( 7- 1, 6- 0) posted a 7-2 road victory against Laurel (3-4, 2-4) in Section 2. Aric White, Gio LoNero and Connor Rothhaar each had three hits for the Rebels.

Softball

• In a game that featured two Class 2A ranked opponents, No. 1 Neshannock (6 -0, 4-0) remained unbeaten with a 3- 0 win at home against No. 4 Laurel (4-3, 21). Addy Frye pitched a nohitter, struck out 16, and walked none to pick up the win for the Lancers. Frye also had two single and an RBI.

• Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (6-2, 4-0), ranked No. 3 in Class 2A, rallied from a 4-1 deficit to pull out a 6-4 road victory against Charleroi ( 6- 2, 3- 2) in Section 3. Leann Walzer, Morgan O’Brien and Lilli Wamsley had two hits. Kaylee Sypolt had a double and a home run for Charleroi.

• Thirteen innings wasn’t enough for Class 1A No. 2 Carmichael­s (6-1, 3-0) and No. 3 Chartiers-Houston (61, 4-0) in their Section 2 showdown. The game was suspended after 13 innings with the game tied at 5, due to darkness. The game will be completed at a future date.

• Jade Schrenker had four hits, including a double, triple, and home run, scored twice, and drove in two runs to lead Montour (2-2, 2-2) to a 7- 6 win in 10 innings against visiting Blackhawk (1-2, 2-2) in Class 4A Section 3. Danielle Terpack had three hits, including a home run, and drove in three for the Spartans.
