Source: Lions, Goff agreeing on 4-year extension

The Detroit Lions and quarterbac­k Jared Goff have agreed to a $212 million, four-year contract extension, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The person told The Associated Press on Monday that the deal includes $170 million in guarantees, and spoke on the condition of anonymity because the terms were not announced.

Goff ended the Motor City’s decades-long search for a playoff-winning quarterbac­k in January. He helped the Lions earn two playoff victories in one postseason for the first time since winning the 1957 NFL title.

Goff will be under contract in Detroit through the 2028 season.

Other football

All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield, Jr. has agreed to a four-year, $84 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that makes him the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL.

The 25-year-old leads all NFL defensive backs in sacks (15), quarterbac­k hits (21), forced fumbles (11) and fumble recoveries (eight) since entering the league.

• A.J. Smith, a longtime NFL executive who was the winningest general manager in Chargers history, died Sunday. He was 75.

His son, Atlanta assistant general manager Kyle Smith, announced his father’s death in a statement released by the Falcons.

Kyle Smith said his father had been battling prostate cancer for seven years.

• The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will open the regular season at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5, the NFL announced. The NFL will release the entire 2024 season schedule on Wednesday night on the NFL Network.

Horse racing

Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan drew the No. 5 post position for the Preakness.

Bob Baffert-trained Muth, just inside Mystik Dan in the No. 4 post, opened as the 8-5 morning line favorite. Baffert is also saddling No. 9 Imaginatio­n (6-1). Mystik Dan is the 5-2 second choice in the nine-horse field for the 149th rendition of the 1 3/16mile, $2 million second jewel of the Triple Crown.

Golf

Jimmy Dunne, one of the architects behind the PGA Tour’s stunning reversal to strike a deal with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf, abruptly resigned from the PGA Tour board with a letter that expressed frustratio­n at the lack of progress that no longer included his input.

Hockey

Slovakia upset the United States, 5-4, when Milos Kelemen scored with 1:04 left in overtime at the ice hockey world championsh­ip. The Americans were handed their second loss in three games.

Also at the worlds, Sweden routed Germany, 6-1. Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson had a goal and an assist for Sweden. Switzerlan­d prevailed against the Czech Republic, 2-1, in a shootout.

• The Buffalo Sabres promoted minor league head coach Seth Appert to serve as an assistant. Appert went 123-94-22-10 in four seasons with the Rochester Americans of the AHL.

• Vancouver Canucks defenseman Carson Soucy was suspended one game for a cross-check on Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid.

• Colorado Avalanche forward Valeri Nichushkin was suspended for at least six months without pay and placed in stage 3 of the league’s player assistance program before Game 4 on Monday night of a secondroun­d series with Dallas.

Basketball

Lisa Bluder, who coached the Iowa women’s basketball team to the last two NCAA tournament championsh­ip games, announced that she is retiring after 24 years leading the Hawkeyes. Her longtime assistant, Jan Jensen, was named her successor.

Bluder was 528-254 at Iowa, and 716-359 including her 10 seasons at Drake.

• Phoenix Mercury AllStar center Brittney Griner has a fractured toe in her left foot, which will cause her to miss an undisclose­d amount of time.

Wrestling

Spencer Lee, a Franklin Regional grad, qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in wrestling on Saturday. Lee, a three-time NCAA champion at Iowa, qualified in Istanbul at the World Olympic Games qualifier at 57 kilograms.

Winning at the Olympic Trials in April wasn’t enough to get Lee to Paris the summer, he had to finish third or better in Istanbul to clinch a bid.

• Former Pitt wrestler Sean Richmond, who served as the Stroudsbur­g Area School District’s athletic director and wrestling coach, died in a car accident Saturday night.

“Sean became a great leader and impacted a lot of people,” Pitt wrestling coach Keith Gavin said on X. “He will be deeply missed.

High schools

As part of the 67th edition of the Big 33 Football Classic, the all-star game is partnering with the NFL to host its first girls flag football tournament during Memorial Day weekend. The Pennsylvan­ia Scholastic Football Coaches Associatio­n partnered with the NFL to have high school-aged girls representi­ng the Steelers, the Ravens, Philadelph­ia and Washington.
