Strathmore beats Sierra Pacific for first time in five years

The Strathmore High School boys basketball team beat Sierra Pacific 60-49 on Thursday. It was the Spartans’ first win over the Bears in league play in five years, according to head coach Justin St. Clair.

Point guard Seth Aparicio had eight stitches removed on Wednesday and returned to play stifling defense, St. Clair said.

Carlos Lopez scored 16 points to lead the team and Andrew Avalos scored 13 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter. Arturo Topete contribute­d nine points.

Sierra Pacific 42 Strathmore 33

The Strathmore High School girls basketball team lost 42-33 to Sierra Pacific on Thursday.

The Spartans struggled through a putrid shooting night, making only 14 percent of their shots and 8-21 free throws.

The Bears went to a 2-3 zone in the second half and stifled Strathmore, who sank just one three-pointer on the night.

Mariah Hernandez finished with eight points, nine rebounds and five assists. Valeria Romero grabbed 15 rebounds.

WRESTLING Portervill­e 58 Delano 20

The Portervill­e High School wrestling team beat Delano 58-20 on Thursday during Senior Night at PHS.

Senior Moises Duran (1-8) highlighte­d the night with a 11-3 decision win over Angel Nava.

Portervill­e will host Monache next week.

BOYS SOCCER Corcoran 3 Granite Hills 0

The Granite Hills High School boys soccer team lost 3-0 to Corcoran on Thursday.

Though it lost the game, Granite also lost Antonio Valencia to an apparent wrist injury, something for which he went to the hospital. The game was called seven minutes early because of it.

The Grizzlies will play Lindsay on Tuesday.

Strathmore 3 Woodlake 0

The Strathmore High School boys soccer team beat Woodlake 3-0 on Thursday.

Osvaldo Ibarra scored two goals for the Spartans, and Enrique Gomez scored on a 45- yard free kick. Both are freshmen.

“My team came to play,” head coach Jimmy Madrigal said. “They played with heart.”

GIRLS SOCCER Granite Hills 1 Corcoran 0

The Granite Hills High School girls soccer team beat Corcoran 1-0 on Thursday.

Head coach Chris Ross said the Grizzlies limited Corcoran to just four shots on goal.

Granite took the lead in the second half when Veronica Paz dribbled up the sideline and took a shot from 18 yards away that bounced off the post and into the goal.

This was the Grizzlies first East Sequoia League win of the season.

Strathmore 1 Woodlake 0

The Strathmore High School girls soccer team beat Woodlake 1-0 on Thursday thanks to a goal from Paloma Gomez.

Head coach Hector Gonzalez said it was a very physical game that was played in the middle of the pitch, but his team could have scored several more goals.

“It’s good to have an off day now rather than down the road,” he said.
