90th Cinco de Mayo Fiesta approaching
Parade entries being sought
This year marks the 90th celebration of Porterville’s Comision Honorofica Mexicana-americana Cinco de Mayo Fiesta.
The Cinco de Mayo parade will start at 10 a.m. and will be rolling down Main Street on Saturday, May 6.
In their effort to achieve unity in the community, the parade’s theme is “United We Are Stronger.”
The parade will consist of many different forms of entertainment such as the 2017 Cinco de Mayo queen and royalty float, a Danza Azteca ceremony, color guard, colorful floats, dance groups, local school bands, Mariachi and Banda music, mounted entries, Mexican folklore, decorated cars, clubs and many other surprises. Amongst all the entertainment, the parade will honor its Cinco de mayo grand marshals.
Cinco de Mayo is wildly and internationally celebrated to commemorate the “Battle of Puebla,” which took place on May 5, 1862 in the city of Puebla, Mexico. Parade entry applications are available to fill out at Porterville Area Coordinating Council, OLA Raza, or by calling Teresa de la Rosa at 784-1121 or 7841214.
