PHS girls and boys win big in the pool

In front of a packed crowd at Monache High School, Portervill­e’s boys and girls swim teams beat their rivals in both teams’ final East Yosemite League meet on Friday.

The Panthers’ girls team won 105-81, while their boys pulled off a 129-41 victory and took first place in every event.

Ahead of the pack as always, was Portervill­e’s Steven Chapman who had two individual first place finishes. He was joined by teammate Connor Entenman, who also finished first twice as an individual. The two were also on at least two of Portervill­e’s three relay teams that also finished in first place.

Chapman placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with 22.27 and was trailed by Trevor Riley (23.72) in second and MHS Clay Dignam (24.59) in third. Portervill­e swept the 100 breaststro­ke with Chapman in first with (1:06.59), followed by Josh Halopoff (1:06.98) in second and Daniel Davis (1:08.77) in third.

Entenman led the Panther’s sweep of the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:18.03 firstplace finish. He was trailed by Halopoff (2:22.03) in second and Isaiah Allard (2:24.15) in third. In the 500 free, Entenman finished first with 5:42.35, followed by Garrett Lamb (5:45.44) in second and MHS Pierre Crouzet (5:54.39) in third.

Portervill­e’s final sweep of the evening was in the 100 backstroke where they were led by Lamb’s 1:04.16 first-place finish. Christian Lucio placed second with 1:10.75 followed by Alex Kay in third with 1:11.57.

Chapman, Entenman, Davis and Grant Snyder’s took first in the 200-free relay with 1:31.99. Entenman, Snyder, Riley and Steven Wislon took first in the 400-free relay with 3:36.18 while Monache’s Dignam, Nick Taylor, Ian Azevedo and Jack-thomas Lee placed second with 3:47.49. In the 200-medley relay, Portervill­e also took first with 1:48.87. That team consisted of Snyder, Davis, Chapman and Wilson.

Wilson also placed first in the 100 butterfly with 59.67, trailed by MHS Azevedo (1:00.99) in second and PHS Riley (1:03.99) in third. Snyder placed first in the 200 free with 1:51.70 with Wilson (1:58.44) coming in second and MHS Taylor (2:02.04) taking third. Davis placed first in the 100 free with 53.68 followed by MHS Taylor (56.18) in second and PHS Allard (56.82) in third.

Rosemary Chapman and Shyanne Rainey were Portervill­e’s standout amongst the girls after they both took first place in two individual events. Bryn Short continued to do well for Monache, placing first in two individual events as well.

Chapman placed first in the 200 IM with 2:30.78 and was trailed by Tristin Bennett (2:33.90) in second and MHS’ Emily Chapman (2:43.25) in third. Rosemary also placed first in the 100 fly with 1:02.38. Monache’s Dalanie Beardsley (1:06.74) placed second and PHS Brianna Likewise (1:10.84) took third.

Rainey took first in the 500 free with 5:57.24 while MHS Emilee Rodriguez (6:13.25) placed second and PHS Allie Whitten (6:18.83) took third. In the 100 back, Rainey (1:10.39) placed first, Alyssa Bodoh (1:12.94) second and MHS Zannah Castaneda (1:14.47) took third.

Monache’s Short placed first in the 50 free with 26 seconds, followed by PHS Therese Salinas (27.23) in second and MHS Emily Adame (27.45) in third. Short also placed first in the 100 free with 55.70 while PHS Allison Tristao (1:00.70) placed second and Salinas (1:01.82) took third.

Beardsley placed first for the Marauders with a 2:10.14 finish in the 200 free. She was trailed by Tristao (2:11.23) in second and Rodriguez (2:14.42) in third.

Monache’s 200-relay team was their only relay team to beat Portervill­e with a 1:50.34 first-place finish. Beardsley, Adame, Short and Rayleen Jensen beat out Portervill­e’s Bennett, Tristao, Maggie Rummel and Johanna Scheer who placed second with 1:54.31.

Portervill­e’s Rainey, Salinas, Trisato and Chapman made up the 400 free relay team that took first with 4:04.82. Monache’s Short, Jensen, Mason Beardsley and Marie Lobue took second with 4:13.94. Portervill­e’s 400 free relay team made up their 200 medley team that also placed first with 2:01.34

Both teams will compete again at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, in the EYL Championsh­ip meet at Granite Hills High School.
