Commandments for a healthy life
I was going though a notebook from my collage days. And I saw this: I wrote in my notebook 12 Commandments for a healthy life. I don’t remember where it came from, but I want to share it with you. It’s still true today. Plus I will be 75 in September, so now these suggestions mean even more to me than they did years ago.
Place yourself under the care of a competent physician who will be interested in your total well-being.
Eat a varied and nutritionally — balanced diet.
Participate in regular physical exercise.
Sleep seven or eight hours each night. Avoid smoking. Avoid all medications not prescribed by your physician: avoid alcohol. Avoid all recreational and addictive drugs.
Avoid heath hazards — know the potential dangers.
Keep mentally alert. Don’t spend your day watching T.V. That’s not healthily. Mentally or Physically.
Think happy thoughts, laugh, enjoy life. Do not set your expectations so high that you will be constantly disappointed.
Manage your stress in your life. Prepare for those events that you know will be stressful, such as visit from the grandchildren.
Develop a positive attitude toward illness and disability. These problems do not mean the end of a meaningful life.
Feed your soul. Have daily devotions, and pray. Demonstrate your love to your family and friends. Avoid anger, revenge and bitterness they consume too much energy. They only hurt you, the person you are mad at doesn’t care.
I saw this in Newsweek: Someday, there may be remarkable pills and potions that stave off aging. In the meantime, the most reputable advice on how to live longer and stay healthier doesn’t sell a lot of products; Don’t smoke, Don’t drink too much, Eat a balanced died. Exercise moderately. And, as one cosmetics clerk said with a sly wink to the woman who had just paid $275 for two anti-aging face creams: “Stay out of the sun dear.”
