Child dies from injuries

A 1-year-old child is dead and a 49-year-old Porterville man was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-andrun and driving under the influence of alcohol following a collision Monday evening.

The crash occurred on Springville Avenue just east of Doyle Street at 5:10 p.m. Monday.

The California Highway Patrol said the 1-year-old child, identified as Ezriyan Soto of Porterville, was riding in a 2002 Toyota Camry when the vehicle was struck by a 1997 Jeep Cherokee driven by Timothy Mcdarment, 49, of Porterville.

Following the collision, Mcdarment fled the scene, said CHP, but he was captured just west of the crash and arrested a short while later. According to the CHP, Pamela Mccalsoto, 46, of Porterville, was driving the Toyota eastbound on Springville Avenue when she slowed to make a left turn into a private driveway. Mcdarment was also eastbound behind Mccalsoto when he crossed the double yellow line into the westbound lane and attempted to pass the Camry as it was making the left turn.

The front end of the Jeep collided with the left rear of the Camry, where the child was in a child seat.

Mccalsoto, and another passenger, Angelica Davila, 22, of Porterville, had only moderate and minor injuries, respectively. The child was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.

Mcdarment reportedly had only minor injuries.

He was booked into the custody of the Tulare County Jail.
