Be safe and sane this week

-

Fireworksgo on sale today and with the Fourth of July not until Tuesday, residents will have plenty of time to set off those pyrotechnics

Like every summer, the landscape is very dry and unlike the past couple of years, the grass is very tall and thick. We have already seen how fast a fire can start and move, so it is very important for those playing with fireworks to be extremely safe this week.

On Monday, a Red Flag warning — extremely high fire danger — was issued for much of Southern California as humidity levels dropped. That lower humidity only makes it much easier for a fire to start and spread and such conditions may last for a few days.

One of the main dangers of fireworks, even the legal ones, is fire. Sparks can easily ignite dry grass and debris, and even clothing.

Residents setting off fireworks need to have a hose available just in case.

Fireworks are also hazardous to people, especially young children. Every year there are thousands of people injured using fireworks, including children whose clothes catch on fire. Keeping a bucket of water nearby to place hot, used fireworks in can prevent a barefoot child from stepping on one. Keeping a safe distance is imperative.

Children ages 10-14 are at three times the risk of fireworks injuries than the general population.

The National Safety Council advises that the best way to safely enjoy this Fourth of July is to watch a public fireworks display conducted by professionals, instead of setting off your own. Saturday night the city offers its Freedom Fest event, which includes a spectacular fireworks show.

However, if fireworks are legal where you live and you decide to use them, be sure to follow these important safety tips:

Never allow young children to handle fireworks.

Older children should use fireworks only under close adult supervision.

Light fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from onlookers, houses and flammable materials.

Light one device at a time; maintain a safe distance after lighting.

Do not allow any running or horseplay while fireworks are being used.

Never ignite devices in a container.

Do not try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Douse and soak them with water and discard them safely.

And remember that in the City of Porterville anyone caught with illegal fireworks can be fined up to $1,500.
