The Fourth of July, a time of the year where many get together with family and friends, eat delicious food and share stories while they commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

Just like if there was no cake for a birthday, it wouldn’t be right to celebrate Independence Day without fireworks, and the City of Porterville is making sure all residents have the opportunity to buy some this year by designating 14 locations throughout the city.

One of such locations is right outside the Grocery Outlet Shopping Center where Allen Estes, and other volunteers from the First Assembly of God, are stationed.

Estes, who is the youth pastor for the church, said even though he and others will be sitting out in a large blue tent adjacent to the firework stand from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., he noted that business doesn’t usually start to pick up until the last few days.

“It gets crazy,” Estes said, noting that the last chance residents have to buy fireworks is at 10 p.m. on July 4.

When it comes to buying fireworks, Estes said most residents seem to gravitate toward what’s dubbed the 49’er, which got its name from its price.

“It is kind of a mid-price and a lot of people kind of just say I only want to spend $50 so they’ll buy that one,” said Estes, adding that it includes an assortment of fireworks.

For those wanting to go all out, Estes said they can buy The Big Bang, which stands over 4-feet tall and packs enough fireworks to match its $500 price.

“We only have one of those so if you want that you have to get it fast,” Estes said.

Those wanting something more affordable, Estes said they can choose from 19 different items for under $5.

Fireworks sales began at noon on Wednesday and run through 10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4.
