Before he hits the diamond with the Lindsay High School softball team next season, Izzy Torres will have to finish up his duties on the basketball court as the school’s next head coach of the girls basketball team.

Torres is taking over the program from former basketball coach Frankie Arguelles. Arguelles led the Cardinals for the last six seasons and reached his 100th win during the 2016-17 season.

Arguelles kicked off his time at Lindsay with three straight trips to the CIF Central Division IV championships between 2012-2014.

In 2013 with a 24-7 overall record, the Cardinals won their first Valley title under Arguelles and followed it up with a win in 2014 for back-toback titles. Their overall record in 2014 was 25-5 and in both championship years they were also crowned East Sequoia League champions after going undefeated in league.

“He was a great coach that had served our athletes for many years,” said Lindsay athletic director Michael Langston, in an email. Langston added that Arguelles stepped down for personal reasons.

After winning the Valley championship, the Cardinals had two straight losing seasons and did not make the playoffs in 2015. In 2016, the team earned a playoff berth but lost in the first round.

Last season, Lindsay finished over .500 with a 14-13 overall record and went 6-4 in the ESL but did not make

the playoffs. The Cardinals finished third in the ESL and only lost to Strathmore (28-6, 9-1 ESL) and Div. IV Valley champions, Sierra Pacific (29-5, 9-1 ESL). The two teams were COESL champions.

VOLLEYBALL

Lindsay is also in the process of interviewing

coaches for the position of head volleyball coach.

Arguelles, also coached the Cardinals from 2012-16. Under Arguelles, Lindsay never had a winning season.

Last season they finished with an overall record of 5-15. They also did not win a single game in the ESL.
