Strathmore wins ESL All-sports trophy

After the most successful year in Strathmore High School’s athletic history, the Spartans were awarded the East Sequoia League All-sports trophy for the first time in the trophy’s 12-year history.

Strathmore won the award with a total of 136.66 points, beating out Corcoran (121), Sierra Pacific (105), Lindsay (97.66), Granite Hills (79.66) and Woodlake (51).

The Spartans, made up of players from both Strathmore and Harmony Magnet Academy, saw every program except four qualify for the playoffs in the 2016-17 season.

Strathmore teams finished with nine ESL championsh­ips, two Central Section championsh­ips and one Southern California regional championsh­ip. As individual­s, athletes also won one Central Section championsh­ip and went as far as regional and state championsh­ip tournament­s.

FALL

Football – ESL champions after going 5-0 in league. The Spartans won the CIF Central Section Division VI championsh­ip game, as well as the So-cal Regional Div. VI A championsh­ip. After going undefeated all season, Strathmore fell in the state championsh­ip game and finished with an overall record of 14-1. Joseph Garcia was named the ESL’S Most Valuable Player. Volleyball – ESL champions with a 9-1 record, capped off the season with an overall 19-11 record and made it to the quarterfin­als of the CIF Central Section Div. IV championsh­ips. Isabella Galang was named the ESL’S MVP.

Boys Water Polo – ESL champions with a 10-0 record, finished with an overall record of 23-9 and made it to the quarterfin­als of the CIF Central Section Div. III championsh­ips. Garrett Wilson was named the ESL’S MVP.

Girls Water Polo – ESL champions with an 8-0 record in league, finished with a 15-6 overall record and a playoff berth.

Girls Tennis – Took fifth in league with a 7-7 record and finished with a 10-7 overall record.

Cross Country – Both boys and girls cross country finished fourth in league and several runners qualified for the Area Meet.

Girls Golf – Finished fourth in league.

WINTER Boys Soccer – Finished second in the ESL with a 7-2 record and went 12-6 on the overall season. The team lost in double overtime in the CIF Central Section Div. VI semifinal game.

Girls Soccer – ESL champions with a 9-0-1 record and went 18-6-1 on the overall season. The team lost in overtime in the CIF Central Section Div. IV championsh­ip game. Ally Holloway was named the ESL’S MVP.

Wrestling – Finished in fifth place.

Boys Basketball – Finished fourth in the ESL with a 4-6 record and went 17-13 on the overall season. The team made it to the CIF Central Section Div. V championsh­ip tournament but lost in the quarterfin­als.

Girls Basketball – ESL champions with a 9-1 record and finished 28-6 on the overall season. The team fell in the CIF Central Section Div. V championsh­ip game. Mariah Hernandez was named the ESL’S MVP.

SPRING

Swimming – The boys were ESL champions while the girls finished second in the ESL. Several school records were also broken.

Track – The girls team won the ESL championsh­ip. Junior Madison Bower placed first in the CIF Central Section Masters Championsh­ip in the 300-meter hurdles. She went on to finish 12th in the CIF State Track and Field championsh­ips.

Baseball – Finished fifth in league with a 3-12 ESL record and an overall record of 8-18.

Softball – Finished sixth in league with a 4-11 ESL record and an overall record of 8-19.

Boys Tennis – Finished fifth in league with a 5-9 ESL record and an overall record of 7-12.

Boys Golf – ESL championsh­ip team went on to win the CIF Central Section Div. III championsh­ip. Jeeven Larson qualified for Area after placing second in the individual Valley championsh­ip. Larson finished ninth in Area play and moved on to compete in the CIF Southern California Regional championsh­ip tournament.
