More taxes

-

Editor,

We have been paying more tax on our gasoline purchases than nearly all other states for years without keeping our roads in good condition. Now Governor Brown wants to raise those taxes by 12 cents on gas and 20 cents per gallon on diesel. In addition the “cap and trade” taxes on gas refineries gets secretly passed on to the consumers. Now he wants to increase cap and trade because he was counting on that tax to support his “high speed railroad” and it has not fulfilled his wishes.

So, who gets hurt the most by increasing gas prices to the highest in the country? Not the millionaires in San Francisco or the legislators in Sacramento. The folks that will suffer the most is the average worker that must drive to work, for instance our agricultural workers. Very early each morning you can see the hundreds of workers heading for the fields to do the essential work that supports central California. Brown’s tax increase will hurt them.

In addition we must always remember that all taxes of every kind are eventually paid by the consumer. For instance the additional cost of delivering products into California will be passed on to us, as consumers. I talked to a friend in Arkansas and he is paying $1.72 for gas. Is our governor trying to ruin California? Is he trying to make people move to other states? I hear a lot of talk about leaving. Wayne White
