Monache High School cross country started the season with wins for both their girls and boys teams on Thursday afternoon against Exeter in a non-league meet at Veterans Park.

The boys won 15-50 and the girls won 19-50.

Junior Marilou Ruiz won the two-mile race with a time of 12 minutes and 28 seconds, holding off freshman Roslyn Dixon (12:49) of Exeter in second.

Freshmen Aislin Taylor and Chanel Bradley dropped 30 seconds off their times to run 13:18 and 13:15, respectively, to take third and fourth place.

“They work very hard and have incredible attitudes,” said MHS head coach Seth Ishida about his freshmen.

Senior leader Imelda Suarez had pacing duties, helping the freshman run a more consistent race.

The boys were led by Jaden Uphoff with a 10:15 two-mile.

“We are working hard right now, so the times are not as exciting as the runners would like,” Ishida said. “We are starting to gel as a team.”
