CLUBS WEDNESDAY The American Legion Post 20 and Legion Riders Chapter 20

An open studio for budding artists is offered by the Porterville Art Association from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Wednesday at the Art Association office at 151 N. Main St. It will be open to experienced and inexperienced artists who are interested in painting with others or are interested in learning new or different types of techniques or materials. An art instructor will be available for individual instruction and to critique work. There will also be a show of the work every six months. The open studio is open to anyone. The Friends of the Tulare County Library will hold its annual fall Meet the Author event, featuring Gary Soto, which will take place at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7. Author of more than 40 books for children, teens, and adults, Doyle said Soto draws from his life experiences as a child of the barrio in Fresno to create his poems, novels and essays. Doyle said Soto’s poem, “Oranges,” the most anthologized poem in contemporary literature, speaks to the encounter of small graces that can happen in the lives of children. Doyle said the Friends of the Tulare County Library is an association for people who love libraries, reading, books, volunteering, and raising money to enhance public library services.
