Lindsay to consider purchasing new fire truck

Current one is nearly 40 years old

-

The Lindsay City Council will consider today approving a request to purchase a new fire truck.

Chris Hughes, the city’s director of public safety, said his department is in need of a new firefighting apparatus as the current one, a 1983 Spartan Vanpelt, has aged to the point that it no longer has the ability to deliver fire suppression.

Hughes said the city’s current fire truck, also known as Truck 87, was purchased from the City of Porterville in the early 2000s and served the department’s needs. However, nearly 20 years later, Hughes said Truck 87 repeatedly breaks down to the point where it cannot be counted on by members of his department, which he said, “places the members of this department as well as the citizens of Lindsay at risk during fire suppression efforts.”

Hughes said Public Safety Officer Adam Romero contacted three respected vendors and local jurisdictions to gather purchase options and personal input as to the best decision for the City of Lindsay and the Department of Public Safety.

At the council meeting today, Hughes said there will be a Powerpoint presentation that will outline some of the specifications of the three vendor-submitted options and opinions expressed by others from the fire service community.

Hughes said while all three fire apparatus are similar and all undoubtedly meet the needs of the department, he said he recommends that the city purchase the future Truck 87 from Pierce Manufacturing. In other matters:

Will consider approving a letter of response regarding certification of pledged tax revenues.

Will consider oath and appointment of Public Safety Officer Dakota Kirkman.

Will consider a proclamation of appreciation to Philip LOBUE.

Will consider a proclamation declaring September

Railroad Safety Month. Will consider a request

to form an Ad Hoc Committee for community recognition.

Will receive an update on the A.D.A. Self

Evaluation and Transition Plan.

The council meeting starts at 5:55 p.m. today at Lindsay’s City Hall.
