Students from Summit Charter Academy, Lombardi have created and hung signs around the Porterville Fairgrounds fence showing their support for fire fighters from around California and the west. The signs adorn the chain link fences surrounding the fairgrounds fire support base. Fire fighters drive past the signs when departing and returning to base.
The sign-making effort was spearheaded by Vice Principal Heather Lehmann and several teachers who are indirectly involved with the fire area through involuntary evacuations.
“They (firefighters) kept telling us ‘thank you’,” explained teacher Sarah Perry about their reception at the fire camp. “We were there to thank them. These men and women are incredible and we are blessed to have them watching over our families, homes, animals, and land.”
That sentiment was expressed through the signs. Some of which said “Thank you for protecting our forest,” Thank you for being our heroes,” and “thank you, grateful, blessed.”
One facet of the school’s overarching theme, the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, has as a tenant Global Awareness. This sign-making campaign is an offshoot of that idea as it also includes focusing on world issues at home.
“This was a great effort on the part of our teachers, staff, and students who have a real heart for showing appreciation to others,” remarked Principal Stacie Fleischman.
