sergeant Shepherd, the new costumed mascot for the Porterville Police Department, is available to appear at youth-oriented meetings and events. The mascot’s purpose is to spread the motto — “Stand Up and Speak Out!” According to the Police Department, Shepherd will be encouraging the community to “Stand Up” for family, friends and community, and “Speak Out” against drugs, bullies and crime. the Porterville Youth Center offers free recreation for youths after school. The center is open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located inside the Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Avenue. The Youth Center offers a stimulating environment for youths ages10 to 18 and there are no registration fees or monthly costs. The Youth Center’s game room features pool and pingpong tables, game consoles, foosball, board games and more. Members can also enjoy arts and crafts, organized sports and regular adventure trips. Access to the Margaret J. Slattery Children’s Library located inside the Heritage Center offers students a computer lab with Internet access. A quiet classroom is also available for homework assistance. Parents and children must be present when enrolling. monache Choir Department’s will be hosting it’s 3rd Annual Kaleidoscope
5k Family Fun Run on Sunday, Sept. 24. Come run or walk the 5k fun run with your family and friends while getting drenched in a kaleidoscope of powder color. The 5k Timed Race begins at 8 a.m and the 5k Family Fun Walk/run begins at 8:45 a.m. at the city’s Sports Complex, 2701 W. Cost is age 6-Adults $35 per runner or group of 5 runners for $125 if registered by Sept. 20. on Thursday, Sept. 28, Supervisor candidate for the 5th District, Dennis Townsend, will be the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Porterville Republican Assembly. Townsend is a local business owner and entrepreneur. He’s served on several boards and foundations, and has been the recipient of several awards from various chambers and organizations. He’s served as a leader at his church and the community as-a-whole with his Christian values. Some of the issues which candidate Townsend will be focusing on if elected include public safety, continued water concerns, area employment, education, agriculture, forest access and management, industrial development and incentives. Townsend will be holding a questionand-answer period after his speech and will be interested in additional community issues. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Sacramento District and Success Lake, will celebrate the 24th Annual National Public Lands Day Sept. 30 — the nation’s largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands. The Corps of Engineers is waiving day-use fees at Success Lake and its more than 2,400 Usace-operated recreation areas nationwide
in recognition of National Public Lands Day. More than 300 volunteers at Success Lake will work on projects including: painting, sprucing up camp sites, planting trees, planting a drought resistant garden, and cleaning up debris around the lake. The Friends of Success Lake, (Southern Tulare County Sportsmen Association) provides T-shirts for volunteers who attend the event. There will be many supporting community outreach booths for participants to enjoy. If you would like to volunteer or want more information, call the office at 784-0215. Volunteer are asked to bring a hat, gloves, sun glasses, sunscreen, and work shoes — closed toe shoes are recommended. Coffee and pastries will be provided in the morning and lunch will be provided for all volunteers. Registration begins at 7 a.m. with work going from at 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30. People are asked to show up at the Success Lake, Tule Recreation Area, Highway 190 East of Porterville. Turn left at the park sign across from Success Valley Road and enter the Tule Recreation Area.
