Spartan girls volleyball rise to 2-0 in ESL Page 1B

Strathmore volleyball improved to 2-0 in the East Sequoia League with a 3-1 win on the road against Sierra Pacific Wednesday.

Strathmore volleyball improved to 2-0 in the East Sequoia League with a 3-1 win on the road against Sierra Pacific Wednesday.

The Spartans (9-9) won the first set 27-25, dropped the second 2516 and won the next two 25-20 and 25-21.

Isabella Galang led Strathmore with 31 assists, six kills and four aces. Lucy Bennett had 10 digs, seven kills and three blocks while Emily Kissick finished with 15 kills, 14 digs and aces.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Cerro Coso 3 Portervill­e 1

Portervill­e College volleyball lost 3-1 on the road to Cerro Coso in Wednesday’s Central Valley Conference match. It was the Pirates seventh straight loss and fifth in conference.

The team lost the first and second sets 25-10 and 25-23, but won the third set 25-21. Portervill­e lost the final set 25-21.

BOYS WATER POLO

Sierra Pacific 13 Strathmore 11

Strathmore boys water polo lost 13-11 on the road to Sierra Pacific in Wednesday’s East Sequoia League game.

Corey Perigo led the Spartans (5-8, 1-1 ESL) with four goals followed by Sam Wilkinson with three. Moses Bower and Owen Patterson each had two goals as well.

GIRLS TENNIS

Portervill­e 6 Mission Oak 3

Portervill­e girls tennis moved to 5-1 in East Yosemite League play with a 6-3 win over Mission Oak at home Wednesday.

The Panthers took a 4-2 lead in singles with wins from No. 1 Claire Nuno (6-2, 6-1), No. 2 Jenny Smithey (6-1, 6-0), No. 4 Chloe Weaver (6-4, 6-0) and No. 5 Sierra Mitchel (6-2, 6-2).

The team sealed the win in doubles with victories from No. 1 Nuno and Smithey and No. 3 Hannah Walker and Erica Palad.

Corcoran 9 Granite Hills 0

Granite Hills girls tennis lost 9-0 to the defending East Sequoia League champions, Corcoran, at home on Thursday.

Orosi 5 Strathmore 4

Strathmore girls tennis lost 5-4 to Orosi in Thursday’s East Sequoia League match.

In singles for Strathmore, No. 1 Arelli Adams won 8-2 and No. 5 Kacie Bellisch won 8-4.

Portervill­e girls golf fell 290-338 to Mission Oak in Thursday’s East Yosemite League match

at River Island Country Club.

The Panthers low medalist was Angela Eugene with 58. Other scorers for PHS were Julia Hunter (61), Uniese Carrillo (70), Dora Jimenez (74), Kayla Johnson (75).

PHS head coach David Herrera said the team struggled a little more on their short game but everyone played hard and never gave up.
