SATURDAY The improv artists of the Portervill­e High School Drama Department will present “A

Night of Improvs” on the PHS campus at 7 p.m. Saturday. The single performanc­e will take place on the drama room stage (room A-7), directly behind the Portervill­e Memorial Auditorium. Admission price is $1 per person. Throughout the evening, competing teams of young actors from the PHS drama department will take the state in a series of performanc­e exercises with titles such as “Bus Stop,” “Taxi,” and “Freeze Tag.” Often comic in nature, “improv” is fun for both actors and audience. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Sacramento District and Success Lake, will celebrate the 24th Annual National Public Lands Day Sept. 30 — the nation’s largest singleday volunteer effort for public lands. The Corps of Engineers is waiving day-use fees at Success Lake and its more than 2,400 Usace-operated recreation areas nationwide in recognitio­n of National Public Lands Day. More than 300 volunteers at Success Lake will work on projects including: painting, sprucing up camp sites, planting trees, planting a drought resistant garden, and cleaning up debris around the lake. If you would like to volunteer or want more informatio­n, call the office at 784-0215. Registrati­on begins at 7 a.m. with work going from at 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30. People are asked to show up at the Success Lake, Tule Recreation Area, Highway 190 East of Portervill­e. Turn left at the park sign across from Success Valley Road and enter the Tule Recreation Area. Make the first left turn and registrati­on will be at the large picnic shelter on the right side of the road and across from the campground.

Sergeant Shepherd, the new costumed mascot for the Portervill­e Police Department, is available to appear at youth-oriented meetings and events. The mascot’s purpose is to spread the motto — “Stand Up and Speak Out!” According to the Police Department, Shepherd will be encouragin­g the community to “Stand Up” for family, friends and community, and “Speak Out” against drugs, bullies and crime. The Portervill­e Youth Center offers free recreation for youths after school. The center is open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located inside the Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Avenue. The Youth Center offers a stimulatin­g environmen­t for youths ages10 to 18 and there are no registrati­on fees or monthly costs. The Youth Center’s game room features pool and pingpong tables, game consoles, foosball, board games and more. Parents and children must be present when enrolling. Portervill­e Breakfast Rotary’s 1950’s Casino Night is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Portervill­e Fairground­s, 2700 W. Teapot Dome Ave., Portervill­e. The event goes from 6 to 10 p.m. Presale tickets are available from Rotary Club members for $35 per person and will be $45 per person at the door. Ticket holders receive $300 of fun money and dinner. There will also be a costume contest, a no-host bar, silent auction, raffles and door prizes. All proceeds benefit Portervill­e and the surroundin­g communitie­s.
