- Recorder@portervillerecorder.com

Porterville Unified School District and Burton School District will join schools from around the country to celebrate National Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 4, in partnership with the Porterville Police Department sending a unified safety message to our community.

While students will be walking and rolling to school, members of the Porterville Police Department will be assisting crossing guards and deploying additional officers to the neighborhoods near schools to enforce traffic laws. These combined efforts are to remind everyone of the importance of pedestrian and bicycle safety this day and everyday represents.

Look for walkers and bicyclists along all streets, especially near schools, in the early morning hours before school and during the afternoon hours when schools dismiss for the day.

Walk to School Day raises awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. These events build connections between law enforcement, families, schools and the broader community.
