Marauders girls water polo 2-0 in tourney

Monache High School girls water polo went 2-0 to start a two-day tournament at Clovis North on Friday.

In their first game, the Marauders defeated Stockton’s St. Mary’s (54) 8-6 then took down Merced’s El Capitan (67) 8-3.

Dalanie Beardsley led MHS with five goals in each game for a total of 10 while goalie Claire Schein had 15 saves. Emily Chapman scored one goal in both games, while Maddy Chapman and Kalina Weaver had one goal apiece against El Capitan. Tracy Mccoy and Raeleen Jensen each had one goal against St. Mary’s.

Today, Monache faces Roseville’s Woodcreek (7-7) at 8 a.m. and Oakdale (2-5) at 12 p.m.

Strathmore 16 Granite Hills 0 Strathmore girls water polo shut out Granite Hills 16-0 on the road in Thursday’s East Sequoia League game.

Aimee Alarcon led Strathmore with three goals while Hannah Hartsell, Madison Bower and Sam Dieterle scored two apiece. Kylee Blackwell, Alec Huth, Hayley Tharp, Paulina Cemo, Tisha Tolentino, Sidney Hartsell and Jaylee Clark each scored one goal.

BOYS WATER POLO

Strathmore 13 Granite Hills 8

Strathmore boys water polo defeated Granite Hills 13-8 on the road in Thursday’s East Sequoia League game.

For Granite Hills, Ivan Ibarra led the team with three goals while Gary Hanson and Salvador Ibarra tallied two apiece. Cuauhtemoc Velarde also chipped in a goal for the Grizzlies.

GIRLS TENNIS

Granite Hills 5 Orosi 4

Tied 3-3 after singles, the Granite Hills girls team rallied to win the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to beat Orosi on the road 5-4 in Thursday’s East Sequoia League match.

In the No. 3 match, Griselda Huerta and Yatziri Gonzalez held off an Orosi charge at the end beating their opponents 8-7 and then 7-4 in the tie breaker. No. 2 Kellyann Whited and Leelu Amparano fought back from a 5-0 deficit to win 8-7 and then also won the tiebreaker 7-4 for the Grizzlies.

Whited also won the No. 1 singles 8-5 while Huerta won the No. 6 match 8-6. No. 4 Jelitza Alcantar won the No. 4 singles match 8-2.

“These Grizzlies played with heart and never quit,” said GHHS head coach Shelly Lozano. “It was impressive how well they were able to come back when they were down. I’m so proud of the girls tonight. Grizzly Pride.”

GIRLS GOLF

Monache 257 Delano 346

Monache girls golf beat Delano 257-346 on the road Thursday in an East Yosemite League match.

The Marauders’ medalists were Abigail and Katelyn Choi who both shot a 41. Sandra Renteria shot a 46, Vannessa Mendoza shot a 55 and Gwen Chavez shot a 74 in her first EYL match to round out the scoring.
