Council approves SLESF grant, appoints Harmon as City Clerk

-

The Lindsay City Council accepted Tuesday a Supplemental Law Enforcement Services Fund (SLESF) grant award and authorized a $100,000 expenditure from fiscal year 2017-18 grant fund.

Chris Hughes, the city’s public safety director, said the grant will reduce demands on the city’s general fund and increase the city’s public safety department’s ability to serve and protect the community. He added that a total $71,032 will be used to continue funding one police officer position and $28,968 for a portion of one community services officer.

The council also appointed City Finance Director Bret Harmon as City Clerk, effective Oct. 1, 2017.

City Manager Bill Zigler said the position of city clerk has been traditionally held within the city by a department head as a collateral duty due to the city’s size and its limited financial resources.

Zigler said the city clerk position is an existing, but non-budgeted position, being covered previously by an outof-classification stipend. The change, Zigler said, will be covered under the director of finance’s existing salary scale and would not impact the budget.

The next regular city council meeting starts at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at Lindsay’s City Hall.
